Things to do in Grantham

Grantham has a welcoming atmosphere and sits close to the county border, very well connected by the A1. It's also home to far more than its fair share of stately homes and jaw dropping buildings - history has certainly been kind.

Don't miss pretty St Wulfram's church, or the characterful Ellys Manor House, which is an old wool merchants house built in the late 15th to early 16th century.

Harlaxton Manor is another truly spectacular building and was built in the early 19th century, Woolsthorpe Manor is also well worth a visit, particularly for fans of Isaac Newton as this modest home is where he was born.

The two nearby castles - Belvoir and Grimsthorpe, make for interesting day trips. Belvoir's state rooms are sure to get everyone ooh-ing and aah-ing, but then it's also got a spa, restaurant, formal gardens and gin bar (just for the adults). And why stop there when you can

A trip to Grantham Museum will teach you about the history of the county as well as the life of Margaret Thatcher. Take in bits and bobs that bring alive the Second World War, including a fascinating D Day exhibition.

On sunny days a visit to Belton or Wyndham Park makes for a nice stroll or picnic, and Easton Walled Gardens aren't know as the county's lost gardens for nothing. There are 12 acres to explore with a woodland walk, turf maze and much more. If the kids start clamouring, they'll soon be cheered up at the area's bowling or entertainment centres where you can try anything from paint balling to go-karting. Segway tour anyone?

Nearby you can take a short drive to Southwell to visit The Workhouse, or Greet House where you can enjoy a guided tour and learn about the history of the building. If you're ready for something a little more urban, head for Nottingham or Lincoln.
