Things to do in Lincoln
Begin your stay with a visit to Lincoln Castle – one of the city’s main attractions. Stroll on the stone curtain wall for breathtaking views over the city as well as the surrounding countryside. Head down to the Victorian prison and dress up as a prisoner as you see what life was like behind bars. After you’ve soaked up the history, enjoy some of the treats on offer at the castle café.
Those wanting to walk to the castle can head south from the city and up the aptly named Steep Hill. Not for the faint-hearted, the hill (voted ‘Britain’s Best Street’) is littered with interesting boutique shops and is a good place to stop for a bit of grub or a cold drink.
Try out the Lincoln Mystery Treasure Trail for the budding detectives in the family. Taking you around some of Lincoln’s highlights, the clues will take you to various buildings and monuments which eliminate each suspect in the mystery. Find them all and discover whodunit.
In the evening, try out a spooky experience on the Original Lincoln Ghost Walk. Enjoy the haunting stories as you learn about a different aspect of the city’s history.
Soak up even more history on a visit to the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. See a real WWI tank before letting the kids run wild at the History Hunters playground. It’s free admission too!
Enjoy a day out to the Collection Museum. Head to their activity centre where kids can dress up as dragons, knights and princesses and can design their own Roman shield too. Afterwards, learn about the Romans, Vikings and more at their archaeology section.
When the kids have finished making their shield, take them to Doddington Hall and Gardens. Roam the Elizabethan mansion before settling down for a spot of lunch in the beautiful gardens surrounding the estate.
Take a break from the sightseeing and catch your breath at Hartsholme Country Park. Picnic by the lake and feed the ducks or, if you don’t fancy a packed lunch, eat at the café.
Or unwind at the Lincoln Arboretum. This grade II park contains beautiful gardens and has good picnic spots by its lakes and fountains.
When you’ve finished exploring the city, head outside of Lincoln and learn more about the legend of Robin Hood at Nottingham or head to the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB for a stroll around the stunning landscape.
