Things to do in Taunton
Make time for Taunton, Somerset's county town, which is set in an enviable position between some of the county's top beauty spots.
Nestled into the walls of a 12th century castle, the Museum of Somerset is a gem - and the whole family will want to see the boneshaker bike, the 'giant' shoes of a man 7 foot tall and cauldrons perfect for cackling over. While you're there, take an amble around the castle and find out about its sieges and bloodthirsty battles.
If you're hunting for souvenirs, Taunton's independent shops are perfect and if that all leaves you peckish, the farmer's market is the spot for you. For the authentic flavour of the South West, sup on some cider at Sheppy's, too.
If shopping feels a bit too fast paced, you can recharge your batteries with a nosey at the Church of St Mary Magdalene and St James Church, both unusually pretty. Vivary Park could just be a chance to walk among the flowers and spread out a blanket for a picnic, but you can also swing from the treetops thanks to the Vivary Adventure and High Ropes Centre. The Bridgwater & Taunton Canal is a tranquil place that is great to explore on foot or by bike.
Get back to nature in the beautiful Hestercombe Gardens, just a short way from Taunton. There are several other places nearby that are well worth visiting too such as the village of Bishops Lydeard which is home to Bishops Lydeard Mill (complete with tea room interactive displays). The Willows and Wetlands Visitor Centre is perfect for spotting wildlife and you'll be sure to take home one of their willow craft baskets.
Are the hills calling your name? Explore the stunning Quantock Hills on horseback through Quantock Trekking and of course, this AONB is also a wonderful place to explore on foot too!
Beautiful Cothay Manor and an exciting trip on the West Somerset Railway are just a few of the other things that visitors can enjoy during day trips from Taunton.
