Penybont includes the historic Thomas Shop with its lovely museum, cafe and wool emporium. For more great sights, head to the local gem, the Elan Valley and meet the feathery residents at the Red Kite Centre in Rhayader.

Put your best foot forward on the Offas Dyke Path or ancient Glyndwr's Way, both spoiling you with their stunning views.

Kids who need to play off steam will have a whale of a time at Quackers Play Barn or the Play park at Llandrindod Wells Lake. For strolls that suit little and big feet, there's Brecon Canal, the pretty Vale of Rheidol railway and new friends at a small breeds farm at Kington.

Trot off into the sunset from the Heart of Wales riding stables or hot foot it to Elan Valley Leisure where you can take on canoeing, climbing, kayaking, abseiling and even orienteering. As if that wasn't enough, the area is also packed with clay pigeon shooting, paintballing and other great choices for groups.

Presteigne is an art lovers paradise with many events and exhibitions being hosted throughout the year.

There are far too many great pubs and restaurants in the area to count, including the Severn Arms Hotel, Crown Inn in Rhayader and many more - often with a cosy interior and tasty grub.

Other great places to explore include:

  • Willow Theatre
  • Wyeside Arts Centre
  • The Hall at Abbey Cwm Hir
  • Powys Castle
  • Croft Castle
  • Ludlow
  • Hereford Cathedral
  • Brecon Cathedral
  • Gilfach Nature Reserve
  • Stanner Rocks National Nature Reserve
