Exploring the outdoors
The Brecon Beacons are an essential part of any visit to Powys and the Black Mountains are a good place to start for exploring the incredible landscape. Popular among hikers, cyclists and horseriders, this range of hills are spread across parts of the county and each offer views over the vast countryside.
If you want a challenge, trek up to the highest mountain in the Black Mountains, Waun Fach. Beginning from Castell Dinas, hike up to the peak and take in the incredible scenery over the Radnor Forest and Rhos Fawr.
Keen walkers can head onto the Offa’s Dyke National Trail running along the England/Wales border or, to pass through the Black Mountains, the Beacons Way and the Marches Way have you covered. The 135 mile Glyndwr’s Way also passes through the county.
Alternatively, the National Showcaves Centre is another popular attraction that the whole family can enjoy. Take the kids to get up close to over 200 life sized dinosaur models and explore the Dan yr Ogof cave. Soak up the rich history here, with a few famous formations including the ‘Alabaster Pillar’ and ‘Angel’ a must see. Make time to wander through the Cathedral cave and Bone cave too.
Seven wonders of Wales
Originating from an anonymous written rhyme noting some of the country’s stunning settings, here in Powys you can tick one off the list – Pistyll Rhaeadr. Meaning the ‘spring of the waterfall’, this Site of Special Scientific Interest nestled in the Berwyn Mountains is Britain’s tallest single drop waterfall. A footpath will take you to the top of the fall, where you can also soak up the spectacular scenery of the Llyn Lluncaws lake.
Close to the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains, you’ll find Lake Vyrnwy. Roam around this stunning reservoir set amidst woodland and overlooked by towering mountains. Take one of the six woodland walks available here and spot the abundance of wildlife on the Sculpture Trail or hire a canoe or kayak and head onto the water. Bike hire is also available.
The Elan Valley also has opportunities for angling and stargazing under Dark Skies. Craig Coch is arguably the most popular of the six dams and is the highest within the Elan Valley. Take a tour of the beautiful scenery with many footpaths guiding you through the landscape where you’ll see the other dams including Garreg Ddu, in the lower Elan Valley, and Pen y Garreg.
Medieval landmarks
If you’ve come to Powys for the history, head to Welshpool - the home of Powis Castle. Admire the red sandstone exterior of this 13th century castle towering over the lush greenery covering its famed garden.
Wander along the terraces whilst admiring the dramatic setting on a stroll through the grounds before finding a spot to enjoy your picnic. You’ll spot Long Mountain in the distance and a wide range of plantlife. Little ones also have plenty of space to runaround in.
After you’ve explored the gardens, head into the castle and admire the wide collection of artefacts, sculptures and more on display from across the globe. Take a look at the Clive Museum too featuring a large collection of Indian artefacts including a golden tiger head.
Don’t overlook Montgomery Castle either. Situated high above Montogmery town, these medieval ruins boast superb views over the town and the valley below.
Kids can enjoy exploring King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Machynlleth. Once a Welsh slate mine, start your quest through the underground cave and meet icons of Arthurian legend and ride along the Dragon River. This experience brings legend to life with light and sound effects on a tour guided by a Dark Age boatman.
Other attractions
If the sun isn’t shining, there are plenty of indoor options for the whole family including the Corris Craft Centre. This pottery studio lets you craft your own masterpiece and is fully equipped with a range of paints, brushes, sponges and more. The Chockablock studio here also gives you the chance to make your own chocolate bar!
Or make a splash at the Bro Ddyfi Leisure Centre. The 20m pool inside is suitable for all age groups and, during weekends and school holidays, opens up a 30ft water slide. You can also work up a sweat in the sports hall with a game of badminton, table tennis, basketball and many others. Rackets and equipment are available to hire. If that’s not enough, there is also a 15ft climbing wall.
Why not also pay a visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology? Featuring a wide range of interactive displays as well as play areas for the kids, there are also acres of woodland to explore here. See the Bee Hut or visit in time for a ride aboard the great cliff railway.
