About Shire Camping

Making up part of a 400 acre working farm, camping here is surrounded by lush green landscapes. There's lots of classic English countryside to get to know, from charming lanes to an excellent network of footpaths for keen walkers. It's easy to access with drive-in entry and the sunsets are fabulous, as the site is beside Sunrising Hill on the Edgehill escarpment, one which history buffs will recognise from its role as a battleground in the English Civil War. Grassed pitches are level and allow both barbecues and campfires (with supplies available to buy on site), so you can get a fire going of an evening and rustle up some grub. If you can't get the tent to fit in the boot or can't find the tent pegs, there's no need to worry here. Book yourself a pre-erected bell tent and you have the option to also hire a comfy airbed inside.

The site is open for weekends between 30th April and 9th July and all days of the week from 14th July until 2nd September.

Large Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesAug 2023

Great back to basics site but with flushing toilets, fabulous showers and washing up facilities. Lovely site with clear designated areas for you to use. Harry is on hand to ensure you have settled in and with logs for you to use in the fire pit. Highly recommend to anyone needing a campsite in the area.

Lovely and friendly

Medium Tent - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesAug 2023

We had a great stay over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The staff were very friendly and helpful, bringing logs around in the evening. Pizza night on a Saturday was a great idea after just having got there and set up. There was a nice, friendly atmosphere and lovely views. Facilities are simple but all you need and generally clean. Only downside is that the drains were slightly smelly, but that's camping! Definitely recommend if looking for an off grid and somewhat remote setting.

A fab time had by all, just one downside

VW-Type Campervan - Non Electric Grass Tent PitchesAug 2023

Harry and Franco could not have been more welcoming. The size of the pitches with the fire pits and daily delivery of wood was fantastic. The location is wonderful and would highly recommend the delightful walk to The Peacock Inn, Oxhill, you won't be disappointed. Pizza night was also fab. The only downside to this campsite is the 'no waste' rule. I didn't think that would include sanitary waste, but was rather dismayed to find out that it did. (Unless I missed something!) Which is why I can't give this five stars across the board. A real shame, because everything else was spot on! Maybe something to think about for the future and would highly recommend otherwise!

Well behaved, non-yappy dogs are welcome if they are always on leads. Owners of an un-attended dog (or dogs mess) will be required to leave and without compensation. Stray dogs on farmland, are very likely to be shot.

The site does not allow day visitors, except in exceptional circumstances!

No Caravans, large Camper Vans or Motorhomes. VW campers (or similar) are more than welcome.

Each pitch has a fire pit for you to use. The site insist that all firewood burned on site is bought through them. There are plentiful supplies of firewood and kindling on site (£7 per bag). Long Meadow is near woodland, which is under threat from destructive diseases such as Dutch Elm disease, Ash Dieback and Bleeding Canker in Horse Chestnuts. These may be spread by spores from burning wood and while we are sure our wood is disease-free, we cannot take the risk on wood from unknown sources. Do not allow processed wood, which are invariably polluting and include nails and other metal objects. The meadows are grazed by livestock in the closed season and these can cause suffering and death.

Only allow BBQ's that are off-the-ground, but you can have a campfire barbecue if you wish (bring a grid). Disposable BBQ's are not allowed.

Non-acoustic music is not allowed (ie radio's phones, car stereo's etc) and while they tolerate acoustic music, people must be considerate of their neighbours. Banter around the fire until the early hours is encouraged, but quiet time is after 2200 and before 7am (to include early-rising children!), when disorderly behaviour, gratuitous noise, shouting, singing or screaming will not be tolerated. They reserve the right to immediately ask you to leave should this occur. Hen and Stag parties are not permitted. Do not allow fireworks or Chinese lanterns.

It's asked that all rubbish is removed from the site and you will need to bring bin bags with you. They manage the campsites sustainably and cannot deal with large amounts of rubbish.

Cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to personal possessions or vehicles during your stay. Neither accept responsibility for accidental injuries. Please be aware that this is a working farm and that there are streams/ponds livestock and heavy agricultural machinery on the farm, so children should not be left unattended at any time.

FAQ

Arrivals are due between 3pm-8pm and check-out is due by noon on day of departure.

Up to two dogs are welcome during your stay, provided they are kept on a lead at all times and are not a breed/crossbreed listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Every pitch here includes its own fire pit and the site have firewood and kindling available to purchase - BBQs are welcome, provided they are kept raised off the ground. Disposable BBQs are not permitted.

All good walks deserve a reward, so head a mile into Oxhill village where you will find a great pub.

A five minute nip in the car or a 40 minute walk takes you to Tysoe, which has a good shop, plenty of history and good walks leading up to Edgehill. For other family days out there are enticing National Trust properties, a local farm with a delicious pick your own and of course lots of very picturesque Cotswold hamlets and villages.

For action packed options, you can also drive to golf courses, go-karting and access a fantastic gliding club close by.
