About the site

Enjoy camping in a scenic valley below mountains and beside Llyn Gwynant with the River Afon Glaslyn running by. Iconic walking routes are available directly from the site, with the Watkin Path, PyG and Miners Track up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) all within a five minute drive. For campers, there is a wide range of pitches available. Choose from small non electric grass pitches for backpackers arriving by foot or bicycle, non electric grass pitches selected on arrival, and three lakeside 7m x 8m grass pitches for tents and campervans. There are also electric 7m x 8m grass pitches and eight larger electric grass pitches for tents up to 9m x 10m. Please note that cars are not permitted on the lakeside, electric or large electric grass pitches and must be parked in the designated car park. Campervans up to 6m or 7m, along with roof tents, can choose from non electric hardstanding pitches, electric hardstanding pitches and six lakeside electric hardstanding pitches, all of which are gravel. The lake is ideal for swimming or boating and is free to use by campers, with boat hire available at the riverside that offers canoes, kayaks, Canadian canoes and paddleboards for hire by the hour. Or bring your own at no charge! Campfires are allowed but only in the site's own raised fire pits, which are free to use but only with wood bought on site. Raised BBQs are also permitted, but must not scorch the grass. Dogs are welcome, but a maximum of two dogs are permitted per pitch, and they must be on a lead at all times except in the woodland dog walking area.

Llyn Gwynant Campsite's season normally runs from March until October. Sign up to alerts and we'll let you know when bookings re-open.

A note from the site themselves...

This beautiful site is on a working mountain farm owned by Clough Williams-Ellis, the architect of Portmeirion, nearly 100 years ago. He was a great conservationist and the site still belongs to his family, who manage it on ecological principles with wonderful like-minded staff.

We want campers to enjoy this stunningly lovely place. We also want to protect it so the site is not overdeveloped with green fields and woodlands and the lake shore for all to enjoy. This is a place for the quiet enjoyment of nature.

We love it here and want you to love it too!

Llyn Gwynant Campsite is ideal for...

Things to do on site and in the Nant Gwynant area

For keen swimmers, the lake and river are perfect places for a dip and are popular wild swimming locations, although please make sure children are supervised at all times.

Kayaks, paddleboards and canoes are hired from April to September on fine weekends, and every day during the main school holidays in July and August (pre-booking is not required). You can also bring your own kayaks, canoes and sailing boats to use on the lake and river, and there is no charge if you are camping at the site.

Hiking up the breathtaking hills of Eryri (Snowdonia) is one of the main pulls for this campsite! You can walk up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), a 45 minute walk away, either via the Watkin path that starts to the south of the campsite or via the Miners or PYG tracks, which start to the north of the campsite.

There are many other shorter and easier walks as well, including a gentle 1.5 hour ramble around the shores of beautiful Llyn Gwynant via the village of Nantgwynant, directly from the campsite, or a lovely one hour walk along to waterfalls on the Watkin Path, directly from the site.

For climbers, there are also four crags nearby. One of the most popular is Clogwyn y Bustach, a 20 minute stroll from the site, home to classic routes including Lockwoods Chimney and Gallop Step. A ten minute walk away is Clogwyn y Wenallt, with 20 different climbs, and is best suited for experienced climbers.

Other local attractions include:

  • Dolbadarn Castle (20 minutes)
  • Snowdon Mountain Railway (20 minutes)
  • Llanberis Lake Railway (20 minutes)
  • Plas Brondanw gallery and gardens (25 minutes)
