Thacka Lea Caravan Park puts you at the heart of Cumbria's stunning Lake District and deep within the Eden Valley, the perfect base for exploring further. Ideally placed on the Coast to Coast cycle route the park welcomes dogs and allows visitors to stretch their legs beside the loveliest of the Lakes, Ullswater. Park on tiered pitches with facilities close at hand then get to know the natural beauty of the area.

About the site


The site is ideally located in Penrith, at the heart of the Eden valley, what is often called the gateway to the Lake District. Access is easy as the site is located just off the A6 at the north end of the small market town of Penrith. A family-run business for over forty years, the park has 25 pitches for touring caravans and motorhomes and maintains a warm, small site feel where everyone gets to know their neighbour. Pitches are available on hardstandings and grass, each with the option to have electric hook-ups. The park is over three tiers, with all the facilities easy to reach in the middle tier. Within just a few hundred metres there's a shop for all your essentials, a golf club, a children's playing field and a park to keep active little ones happy Thacka Lea Caravan Park is a 10 minute walk from the centre of Penrith with shops, cafes as all you could need. Only 6 miles away lies Ullswater, which is one of the most beautiful lakes in the District and a short drive away are the historic towns and villages of the Eden Valley.

The site is open from March until 4th January.

Things to do on site and in the Penrith area

Penrith is a 10 minute walk from the site. This historic market town offers many traditional and international dining options, clothing and gift shops as well as attractive cafes to tempt weary walkers. The museum and Penrith Castle give a great insight into the history of the area, once occupied by Richard III. From Penrith, you can hop on a bus or train for further days out around Cumbria, everything is in easy reach.

Surrounding the campsite, the charming Eden valley is centred around the River Eden. The river flows through scenic countryside and traditional towns and villages including Appleby in Westmorland and Langwathby. The picturesque landscape makes it very popular for walking, cycling and sightseeing.

Cliburn Moss National Nature Reserve is chock full of rare plant species and colourful butterflies, plus a team of glow-worms that look spectacular at dusk.

Ullswater, just 6 miles from the site is the second largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in the English Lake District. Visit the unique village of Pooley Bridge to take a cruise on the Ullswater Steamers, or take a walk or drive along the lake to admire the breathtaking and unspoilt landscape. Other picturesque lakes, towns and villages within the Lakes can be easily reached within a short drive such as Troutbeck and the big attraction is beautiful Keswick.

To the east the North Pennines brush the horizon, a fantastic place to hike or climb for active guests. You're spoilt for choice with areas of outstanding beauty on both sides.

Carlisle is only a 30 mile drive away for when you feel like some city sights, enticing visitors with Carlisle Castle and Tullie House Museum and art gallery.
