Things to do in Cambridge

This Cambridge bustling and attractive city in Cambridgeshire merges an intriguing past with a modern twist and charming scenery. There's no shortage of wonderful things to see and do, far and beyond your first thought- which was no doubt that world renowned university!

Topping the list of famous attractions in the city is, of course, the University of Cambridge, one of the oldest and most respected universities in the world. It's possible to visit many of the university's 31 colleges and chapels. They are both superb examples of architecture and the perfect place to daydream of the exciting discoveries that have been made within those cavernous halls. Highlights include King's College, King's College Chapel, Trinity College, Queen's College and St. John's College. Bookworms will never want to leave the enormous university library, either.

It might be, though, that your stomach's keen on a different type of tour. Cambridge food tours are available, taking in everything from delis to gastropubs and even good old English fish and chips- plus they can be customised to suit the individual foodie.

The pretty area known as the Backs - where a number of the university's colleges back onto the River Cam - is also not to be missed and makes a perfect sunbathing or picnicking spot. Explore the area on foot or enjoy a leisurely punting session on the River Cam, which bubbles by, and take in the sights at a sedate pace. It's not just Venice that can conjure romance, lazing in the sweet surrounds of Cambridge's river is a perfect couple's activity.

Next, it's easy to spend days on end exploring the cultural side of Cambridge. The Fitzwilliam Museum has the magic combination of unique collections, exciting exhibits and free entry. The Centre for Computing History will be fascinating to the internet age, showing the first computers and their development, while Kettle's Yard House and Gallery is the one-of-a-kind art collection of a former Tate Gallery curator. While they're visiting, all would-be adventurers should make a beeline for the Scott Polar Research Institute, charting incredible expeditions into the Arctic and Antarctic.

There's lots of educational fun to be had for families at the Cambridge Science Centre. Plus Cambridge's beautiful outdoor spaces will appeal to nature lovers of all ages. Pretty attractions include the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, which offers 40 acres of stunning plantlife and an interactive Giant Tree Trail for little ones. Not far away, Wandlebury Country Park and Nature Reserve is the perfect spot for a BBQ and The Clare College Fellows Garden is a riot of vibrant colour that has stood the test of time.

Beautiful Anglesey Abbey with its attractive gardens is a favourite with families, its winter garden offering year round colour and stunning walks available for young and old, with or without your four-legged friend.

There are an incredible amount of interesting places to visit just outside of Cambridge too. Grantchester Village and the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial are well worth visiting, while the city of Peterborough with its striking cathedral can be reached in under an hour's drive.
