Things to do in Hereford

Curious about Hereford? Take one of two self-guided walks to help you discover the city. Walk one is the Cathedral Circular (1 mile / 1.6 kms) and walk 2, Cathedral to Riveralso (1 mile / 1.6 kms). Enjoy them separately or join them together to form a longer walk.

The Herefordshire Trail is great for families into orienteering and map reading as well as the hiker types, being a long distance path to give a circular tour around the whole county! It links the five market towns of Leominster, Bromyard, Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye and Kington along with some of the picturesque villages and hamlets for which the region is well known.

You can stretch your legs by taking a walk along the River Wye, or head out of the city to explore the extensive countryside in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The current Hereford Cathedral, dates from 1079. Its most famous treasure is Mappa Mundi, a medieval map, the largest medieval map of the world dating from the 13th century. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building.

At the family friendly Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, housed in a spectacular Victorian gothic building, some of the cooler exhibits include a hive of live bees, a two headed calf, a two metre long fish, historic costumes and swords of every shape and size!

Don’t miss dropping into The Cider Museum to find where their best known ‘golden amber’ is produced.  Explore the original cider champagne cellars of the former cider making factory and if the timings right you can join in with the International Cider and Perry Competition.

The Waterworks Museum is based in a Victorian pumping station that served Hereford for 120 years, and tells the story of drinking water throughout the ages through a number of high-quality displays.

The Hereford Racecourse makes for a great day out, or those with children will enjoy the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre, a magical place for your family to go and experience the company of many rare and miniature animals, birds and all sorts of owls from all over the world! Kids will be amazed at the variety between differing types of owl, pleased by the cute and cuddly specimens and blown away by Tilly the tortoise who despite being 26 years is still only 3 inches long!

Escape to the spectacular Weir Garden and be absorbed by natural beauty.  Bordered by the River Wye, The Weir sits within unspoilt Herefordshire countryside and has many historical secrets to uncover. It is managed in a natural way to create a varied habitat for wildlife.

In spring see carpets of bulbs littered between ancient trees, in summer enjoy a picnic by the river to watch the wildlife and in autumn visit the walled garden bursting with seasonal produce is managed in a natural way to create a varied habitat for wildlife.

The market towns of Ledbury, Leominster, Bromyard, Kington and Ross-on-Wye are all close by, as is the larger spa town of Cheltenham, known for its British steeplechase horse racing. Follow that up with the short drive to find Goodrich Castle, Berrington Hall, Brockhampton Estate, Eastnor Castle, Croft Castle & Parkland and Court Farm & Leisure, all well worth the visit.
