About Chapel House Farm Campsite

Situated just five minutes from the England and Wales border, along with the Brecon Beacons National Park, the site is in an ideal location for days out exploring. Surrounded by wildflowers and ancient woodland, this is the perfect spot for wildlife spotting and unwinding in the outdoors. The site offers three different camping areas, each with non electric grass pitches for tents and campervans. Each pitch allows up to six guests with access to a fire pit, great for evenings cooking up a BBQ or toasting marshmallows. The Wood Field area has two pitches available, each a small semi-circle mown into the long grass. This field is vehicle free and the furthest from the facilities, though there are wheelbarrows to help transport your things and it is wonderful for peace and quiet. There is also the Church Field area which provides two extra large pitches and two regular pitches. Each pitch is mown into tall meadow grass, enjoying beautiful views over to the Black Mountains. The main camping pitches lie in the Flat Field, each surrounded by wildflower grass with a mown play area in the centre, great for kids! If glamping is more your style, Peter's Wagon is a traditional wagon situated by a pond in the orchard area. The wagon was built by artist blacksmith, Peter Walker, who lived in it while studying blacksmithing in Herefordshire. The wagon comes with an outdoor seating area, along with a fire pit, perfect for nights in the open. Inside is a double bed, a cosy living area, a kitchenette with cast iron hobs, crockery, table and chairs and a wood burner for those cooler nights. You will also have the luxury of your own hot shower and sink with solar power phone charging and lights. Please note, bed linen and towels are not provided. If you're looking for a true escape, the cosy camping pod for four is hidden amongst the trees, sitting high over the orchard. Inside the insulated pod you will find deep-filled mattresses, along with electric heating and power sockets. Double doors open out onto a balcony with glorious views over to the Black Hill. A lower seating area provides you with an ideal spot for al fresco dining, equipped with a picnic table, log bench and a fire pit with a grill. Please note, bed linen, crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment are not provided for the pod. Located on a working farm, there are slow-growing cattle, sheep and pigs in the surrounding fields with the produce available from the onsite farm shop. Due to the resident animals, the site is pet free so dogs are not allowed, sorry. The site is also certified with the Greener Camping Club so at least one guest per pitch must be a member, though this can be purchased when you book.

Camping stays are available between 22nd March and 27th October. The wagon and pod are available all year round.

Facilities and amenities

Site facilities include a compost loo, three flushing toilets and three showers, a washing-up area, a fridge/freezer and plugs for hairdryers and phone charging. There are also two acres of woodland for kids to play and build dens. There is also a cosy communal stable with a wood burner where guests can eat, along with outdoor tables.

There is an onsite farm shop selling produce from their own livestock. The site also serves hot and cold drinks, breakfast made from their produce, fire cooked meals and pizzas made in the old bread oven. Toasties and cake and food can be served at any time of the day plus local beers, ciders, perry, juice and ice cream. The shop also has a mill and sells heritage flour.

The Bulls Head gastropub is also just a five minute walk away. Haye on Wye is also just a 15 minute drive from the site, a touristy book town with a refurbished castle and independent shops, including a Spar and Co-op. There's also a great wild swimming spot and shingle beach where the Wye passes through fields known as the Warren in Hay.

A note from the site themselves...

Our site is based on our working farm. We have native and slow-growing cattle, sheep and pigs which are suited to life in the hilly wilds of Craswall.

The White Parks are great for conservation grazing too. Similarly, our rooting pigs enjoy the same plants and also turn the soil, providing new opportunities for plants and insects to flourish These are key grazers, doing the same job as the wild boar and cattle of ancient Britain.

Their eating and browsing action is the driving force behind our natural ecosystems. They are an essential ingredient of a healthy, diverse ecosystem upon which plants, animals, fungi, protoctista, and bacteria rely on. They are also a vital part of our fight against climate change, a central component of what we are trying to do!

Sprinter-Type Campervan - Church Field Camping PitchesJun 2023

We had the most wonderful stay at Chapel House. The campsite is part of a working farm and the family who run it are working to create a truly special place. The farm ethos centres around sustainability, eco and heritage, this means there were extra special touches such as wild flower meadows with paths and pitches mown out, ancient grains turned into flour and heritage cattle. Not your average campsite. The farm shop was stocked with all home or locally grown goods. The site itself and location was beautiful, it felt remote and wild but still close to Hay on Wye providing the best of both. Pitches were spacious with large gaps in-between so it did not feel crowded and provided each camper with their own space. We felt like we were the only ones there! Views across to the black mountains and beyond provided the perfect backdrop to an evening round the fire pit. We stayed with our 6 month daughter and it really was wonderful, allowing us to create some treasure memories in a very special place. We would recommend to anyone and hope to return in the future!

Medium Tent - Flat Field Camping PitchesApr 2024

A campsite at Craswall - it most certainly is, being the raison d'être. So, being Craswall, 'The Black Mountain's' fickle weather patterns influence almost everything. You are camping, but please be aware the pitches all seem quite exposed to the elements (however, would great in Summer - big skies etcetera ). Your site facilities (shower, water, flushing loo) are down at the farmhouse, which can be quite a trek away. Having said that, there is at least one eco-loo & the facilities themselves are all robust, functional and clean. Although I had only a brief stay, the farm/site owners were very friendly & helpful. Did I say that you're in Craswall? The campsite gives almost direct walking access to the mountains and is also quite near to a much loved "Michelin Star' Gastro-Pub ('nuff said 😎). To summarise, when previously there, there was only some "rough camping" available locally. For the few £'s that you pay and for the location alone, it's a 👍 from me. Now when can I get back there…

Friendly and well located

VW-Type Campervan - Church Field Camping PitchesApr 2024

Great welcome and guidance finding a spot suitable, given the softness of the ground after weeks of rain. Friendly and helpful. Site is well located for walking. Getting there was a bit like the Cornish lanes, make sure you make metal note of the passing places you pass and make sure you know how to reverse.
