Meredith Farm Camping Certificated Site

Llancloudy, Herefordshire

+ 7 photos

A pretty, quiet and rural campsite, with 25-acres of stream, trees and some very far-reaching views. Sit around a campfire, walk among the hay fields, or venture off the farm and go walking in mountains, by the River Wye or in the Forest of Dean. Spacious and secluded pitches for tents and caravans are available, some fully serviced. There's a hassle free pre-pitched caravan on site. Quiet weekend bar to enjoy with real ales and wines.

About Meredith Farm Camping Certificated Site

Meredith Farm is a peaceful location for people who want a quiet time in the country, with far-reaching views over three counties. Sheltered by the mountains, there is far less rain than most of the country. Most of their share of rain falls on Brecon instead, so the ground is green, but nearly always dry! The site is located just off the B4521 road from Ross-on-Wye to Abergavenny (gateway to the Black Mountains) and is spacious with over 20 acres of tree-lined stream and field. Beautiful spring colours make the site worth an early season look, while blackberries, plums and sloes in the autumn make that a good time to visit as well. All pitches are on grass, accepting just 10 caravans and around 30 tents. There is as much personal space as anyone could wish for and you can pitch near other vans and facilities, or go off to a secluded pitch under the trees, by the stream, or as you like. Serviced pitches offer water and electric hook ups to power lights, batteries, and fridges. The hook ups are not designed to support space heating, water heating and high wattage domestic appliances such as domestic kettles. Campfires are viewed as essential. You can bring your own fire basket or borrow one - and you can collect wood, or the site will supply it. In addition to the pitches, a ready tent and pre-pitched caravan are available for hire. The caravan isn't particularly modern (OK, it's old!), but it is comfortable, clean, dry and set up with electricity for lights, fridge and battery charging. There is a limited gas cooking facility too. Everyone is welcome, from children and cats to dogs and horses, providing they do not bother other visitors. The site is particularly popular with those who want a peaceful time away, and also with cyclists making the trek from Land's End to John O'Groats. Visitors are asked not to play music, but rather to settle in and enjoy a very peaceful time. The site is not a good party venue!

Open from 1 March to 31 October

Facilities and amenities

The site has three washrooms, with showers and flushing toilets. There's also an information area with freezer, kettle, fridge and toaster, and a safe play area for smaller children (near but not too near!) including a guinea pig barn where you can watch pigs of all ages. Free-range eggs (chicken, duck and quail) are normally available, as well as chops, joints, breakfast kits and a range of other essentials in the site's shop.

Nearby, there is a fabulous pub where you are guaranteed a warm welcome. Dog and child friendly, the pub has fine ales and wines as well as excellent and very reasonably priced food. The site is two minutes from a bus stop.

No music!

Nobody wants a ghetto blaster in the neighbouring tent, so we make the whole site completely music-free.

No other rules, as such, just don't do anything that disturbs the peace - that means no loud voices (of any age).

Arrival and departure times aren't set. We have plenty of space, so you can turn up as early as you like and leave as late as you want.

There are numerous animals on site, including lambs (and sometimes kid goats) to be fed by bottle or bucket, pot-bellied pigs, chickens, quail, ducks, wild rabbits and guinea pigs. All are very tame and really enjoy seeing people. Visit them at any time to feed them, sit with them, or join the official feeding round at 9am daily. Lambing is normally between Easter and April.

There is a mile or so of mown paths alongside the stream, around and through the hay-fields, to walk dogs or just stroll before breakfast. There's also a dog-walking enclosure for a lead-free run. At the farm, little ones can let off steam in the toddlers playground and they'll love finding trees to swing in, a stream to fall into, and campfires to sit around. Everything is here, except for music. No music!

Guests have seen deer, hedgehogs, badgers, pheasants, kites, buzzards, sparrow hawks, foxes, peregrine falcon and a very good range of song birds.

There is a great deal you can do in the local area:

  • Symonds Yat Rock East for the peregrine falcon nest, walks and a stop at the Saracen's Head
  • Symonds Yat West for the butterfly zoo, Amazing Hedge Maze and boat trips on the Wye
  • Canoeing on the Wye (collect a canoe from Ross-on-Wye and they'll drop you upstream)
  • Hopewell Colliery
  • Clearwater Cave
  • The steam railway at Coleford
  • Castles galore (Skenfrith, Goodrich and Grosmont Castle)
  • Sculpture walk at Coleford

Activities close at hand include walking, fishing, canoeing, cycling, caving, riding, etc. Country stuff!

Local walks include (guides provided):

  • To the very fine Royal Arms - one hour each way, with a splendid welcome on arrival
  • Up Coppett's Hill (15 mins drive)
  • Up Garway Hill (10 mins)
  • At Symonds Yat (15 mins)
  • Circular walks, starting and finishing at the Bell Inn, Skenfrith (10 mins)
  • Three castles walk, starting at Skenfrith
  • The Black Mountains, maybe taking in part of the Monmouth and Brecon Canal (30 mins)

There are great transport links to Monmouth or Hereford, and from there, Abergavenny, Ross, Coleford and Brecon.
