Things to do in Monmouth
Welsh charmer Monmouth is set in Monmouthshire and has really put its name on the map with its gatehouse Monnow Bridge. The bridge is the only one of its kind in Britain and leads guests over the river and towards the incredible Wye Valley.
Get in touch with the exploits of Horatio Nelson at the Monmouth Museum and, though the town doesn't like to too its own horn, you'll also see the vintage motors and shiney wheels of the Rolls Royce Co, whose owner lived nearby. Follow a spot more of Nelson to the National Trust's Kymin. See the 18th century round house and naval temple with its breathtaking views of the Wye Valley.
Stand to attention at the Regimental Museum for a look at its wartime activities, meander through Monmouth Castle ruins - as sieged during the Civil War - and then refuel with a lovely pub lunch nearby.
When it comes to relaxing on your holiday, the Savoy Theatre is a great place to go. From comedy and drama to music, it's all on offer. Pretty St Mary's Priory Church could be next for a mosey and then go even grander with the Grade I listed Shire Hall. Steeped in history, it had a major role to play in the Chartist Riots.
Just a stone's throw from the town is the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club, where golfers can play a few holes on a championship course.
Too tame for you? You need Inspire2Adventure which will kick things firmly up a notch - with mountain biking, gorge scrambling, rock climbing and abseiling ideal for groups, getaways and adventure weekends.
For a swimmingly good time, it has to be the River Wye, and there's nowhere better to get stuck into kayaking and canoeing. You can paddle through the river's entire length, and there are slow water areas which setup a gentle ride, versus fast flowing rides below Bigsweir Bridge for the pros. If you'd rather stay on land, Bigwell Fly Fishery is an ideal place to cast out your rod.
Walkers aren't forgotten too, of course, so lace up your walking boots and pop onto the long-distance Offa's Dyke Path.
Ready to spread your wings? Monmouth's ideally located for the Clearwell Caves, Puzzlewood, the impressive remains of Goodrich Castle and the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park.
