Things to do in Deal
The seaside town of Deal lies roughly halfway between Dover and Ramsgate on the Kent coast. Once an important port (and mentioned as a village in the Domesday book), it's thought that Julius Caesar landed on the Deal-Walmar coast as far back as 55BC.
The long pebble beach has plenty of room for everyone nowadays, and the cafe at the end of the pier is a good way of rounding off a coastal walk or cycle ride between Walmer Castle and Deal Castle, with superb views out across the Channel.
Deal Castle itself (admission payable) is also a fun diversion, with a warren of passages and tunnels to explore.
Betteshanger Country Park is particularly good for cyclists, with hire available if you haven't brought your own.
Just to the north, Sandwich Bay is one of the area's quieter sand (when the tide is out) and shingle beaches. The beach is accessed via private toll booth (£7 per car).
Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve is very accessible and worth the visit for an hour's stroll.
If you're looking to explore Kent and stay on the coast, but would prefer to avoid the busier resorts, camping in Deal should suit you well.
