Things to do in Hay-on-Wye
A good starting point for the town is to learn about Hay’s fascinating history and quirky characters with Hay Tours. Throughout the year, local volunteers offer expert talks on four different routes lasting an hour or two. Each one brings local history to life, from medieval times right to the present day.
You can also step back in time with a visit to Hay Castle where you can explore the grounds and visit the Honesty Bookshop. The views from the top of the castle steps are one of the best in Hay.
A stroll down to The Warren is also recommended. Hay locals might like to think that this pretty meadow and river beach is their best kept secret, but the word is out. Accessed by the path beside St Mary’s Church or along the Wye from the bridge, it’s a charming walk.
For something more energetic, try the two striking hills to the south, Hay Bluff and the Twmpa (Lord Hereford's Knob). Take a full day and walk both, starting from town or drive to the parking area just below Hay Bluff for a brisk, 30-minute walk that even young children can manage. You’ll be on top of the world, with spectacular views across to Pen-y-Fan.
Another serious walk is the Offa's Dyke Path which starts at the Severn Estuary and follows the border between England and Wales north to the North Wales coast. The route runs along the ridge of the Black Mountains, passes through Hay and continues on towards Kington. It's not for casual walkers, as there are some strenuous stretches, but is popular for good reason. Alternatively, try the Wye Valley Walk which extends from Chepstow and crosses the Offa's Dyke Path at Hay, before continuing on to Rhayader - a total distance of 103 miles.
The walk offers some splendid scenery through unspoilt countryside of Mid Wales and South Herefordshire. A 'Walk Pack' is available from Hay Tourist Information.
The River Wye forms the National Park's boundary at Hay-on-Wye and is superb for canoeists, both beginners and experts. For a dreamy way to burn off a few calories, canoe or kayak downstream from Wye Valley Canoes in Glasbury to Hay. It's a particularly idyllic stretch of the river, with small beaches to stop at on the way.
The river is also the finest salmon river south of the border and popular for coarse fishing. You'll need an Authority Rod Licence and a permit to fish in your chosen section of the river though - available at the local tackle dealers or angling association.
Another great way of seeing the countryside in the Hay-on-Wye, Black Mountains and Radnorshire countryside is from horseback. There are pony-trekking companies to suit everyone's needs, whatever the age group or ability.
The Small Breeds Farm and Owl Centre is a magical place for families to experience the company of many rare and miniature animals, including birds and owls from all over the world. Kids will be amazed at the variety between the owl species - and pleased by the cute and cuddly ones too.
Nearby, Llandrindod Wells is famed for its healing spring waters, or take a day trip to the bustling city of Hereford with its majestic bridge and cathedral.
Finally, when the sun goes down, the sky is dark and the stars come out - you can actually see them. Sadly that isn't common enough nowadays!
