Things to do in Salisbury

England is endowed with countless stunning churches, but few can hold a candle to the grandeur and sheer spectacle of 13th-century Salisbury Cathedral. The cathedral houses an original Magna Carta that dates from 1215. Visitors should also, explore the historic, picturesque Cathedral Close, the largest in Britain where they will find Arundells, the house of former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, and Mompesson House.

Lovers of architecture have a wealth of properties to explore The Parish Church of St. Thomas and St. Edmund, the Church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas and Wilton House with its superb art collections all well worth visiting.

Looking for history, Salisbury's excellent museums provide a great day out for visitors of all ages. Highlights include the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection and the Salisbury Museum, while the Wardrobe will fascinate anyone with an interest in the Infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire.

Salisbury is a relatively flat city, lending itself for some great short, accessible walks as well as some long distance routes too. It’s the start of the Avon Valley Path, following the river from the city, south to Downton and then on eventually into Christchurch Harbour. If you fancy the thrills but want to keep your feet firmly on the ground, Salisbury Racecourse stages 16 flat race meetings the end of April and early October. Horse racing is the second highest attended sport in the country and is a fabulous day or evening out with family and friends. 

Or visit Wessex Raceway Indoor Karting, one of the best go karting tracks to visit, the raceway is a huge 700m indoor karting track which caters to experts and amateurs.

A visit to River Bourne Community Farm is a great opportunity to see a working farm and purchase the produce from the farm shop. Education plays a large part in this farm, with an emphasis on sustainability and ecologically sound practices.

Or if you prefer green spaces then Harnham Water Meadows is a serene nature preserve featuring guided walking tours & views of the Salisbury Cathedral.

The fun challenge of Salisbury Escape will also appeal to both kids and adults. Accused of a crime you didn’t commit, with just 60 minutes on the clock to prove your innocence, things are sure to heat up in the Escape Rooms.

Don’t miss Stonehenge, the world-famous prehistoric monument built as a ceremonial centre. With a fantastic visitor centre and exhibition space, which includes a 360-degree virtual experience, plus over 250 objects of international importance on display, and the reconstructed face of an Early Neolithic man is a highlight.

Outdoor lovers will also enjoy a visit to Larmer Tree Gardens and the New Forest National Park. Walkers will enjoy exploring Salisbury Plain and the Imber Range Perimeter Path.

The cities of Winchester and Southampton and the coastal town of Bournemouth are also under an hour's drive from Salisbury.
