Ancient cloisters and retro arts
Nature is king in Worcestershire, thanks to beauties like the Malvern Hills, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Take a climb to the highest summit of the hills, as the Worcestershire Beacon at 425 metres spreads out the Severn Valley and surrounding are before you like an incredible patchwork masterpiece.
Another beautiful setting is Croome Park where you can step into the remains of a secret wartime air base, RAF Defford, where thousands of people lived and worked during World War II. These beautifully sculpted gardens and court hold plenty of their own hidden attractions of their own. Let your feet carry you around Church of St Mary Magdalene and the Evergreen Shrubbery to the Grotto and Sabrina and the incredible Croome Court.
It's a good idea to follow this up with a trip to the majestic Worcester Cathedral where you can explore the royal tombs of King John and Prince Arthur, walk down to the ancient crypts or visit the medieval cloisters and chapter house. Try to top that with the eerie beauty that is the Pershore Abbey. It's full of high ceilings, vibrant stained glass and impressive gardens - definitely one to explore on an atmospheric day, perhaps with a storm raging in the background!
The Great Malvern Priory is one of the greater parish churches in the country. Founded in 1085 and containing the finest collection of stained glass after York Minster, this stunning church is just one of the beautiful sights in Malvern.
If you like your history even more ancient than that, take a walk into the medieval past with a trip to Eastnor Castle. This fairytale Georgian castle is situated in the Malvern Hills and is often used as a stunning backdrop in films. Behind the splendour of its huge walls the castle contains beautifully restored interiors featuring medieval armour, tapestries and fine art. It's brimming with options, so duck into its ancient and mystical grounds, the intriguing knight’s maze, castle playground, castle tea room or ice cream parlour.
Add a note of harmony, visiting the Elgar Birthplace Museum which was once home to Edward Elgar, one of England's greatest composers.
For the cinema and theatre lovers out there, the Malvern Theatres and the Regal Cinema are unique treats. The Regal Cinema is all about the quirky, with its table-and-chairs stalls section, two-storey layout, large comfortable bucket seats and in-screen bar. The Malvern Theatre has the kind of architecture and style within its very walls that's enough to turn your head. Step into its work and you'll find a huge selection of plays, music, comedy, dance and much more.
Take to the hills
The start of all good outdoor adventures is likely to be in the Malvern Hills AONB. These rolling hills contain dozens of winding paths that will take visitors through some of the region’s most beautiful areas. Give yourself the choice between easy winding meanders that are suitable for anyone wanting a restful stroll, and challenging hill climbs that will test even the fittest outdoor adventurers - depending on how much of the local treats you've been tasting!
The hills also have a network of country lanes, bridleways and trails that allow cyclists to get into their stride. There's the 'cathedral to spa' option, running through dips and valleys between Worcester train station and Droitwich Spa and lovely selection of other rides.
If you like your thrills topped off with a few of the undead, the Zombie Boot Camp is ready to deliver. Action packed and totally outside of the box, you're left deep in an adrenaline-fueled zombie survival horror experience and it's not for the faint-hearted. Or anyone under the age of 16, for that matter.
To escape those zombies, taking to the trees is the only sensible option, with the Go Ape Centre at Wyre Forest. This two hour or three hour adventure course will see you fly down zip wires, leap into the air on a Tarzan swing and tackle tree crossings. If swinging through the trees sounds like a little too much hard work then you can zip round the forest on the Segway Experience, tackling the trails with a little electronic power.
Wildlife watchers belong in the secluded areas of Knapp and Papermill Nature Reserve, which is a great place to see birds, otters, butterflies and many other small woodland creatures. It's also a real sight for sore city eyes, so pack a picnic and make a day of it.
If the only birdies that really interest you are the golfing kind, the Vale Golf & Country Club will get your reaching for your clubs on a par 74, 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole shorter course - open for membership and handy day passes. The par 74 course is any golfer’s dream with sand traps, woodlands, fantastic fairways and challenging greens - so it's time to test yourself!
Explore unbeatable history
The Tudor House in Worcester will bring the past close enough to touch and keep the whole family entertained. This stunning house stands on the most historic street in Worcester. Inside you will find rooms over 500 years old, exhibits you can touch and interact with and for anyone at a child's eye level you can keep an eye out for the elusive Tudor Rat.
Why not also jump on a boat and explore the Severn River. The Alvechurch Boat Centre has your dream holiday as a salty sea dog lined up. Hire one of the narrow boats and meander through tempting countryside, captain's hat optional, as you explore the waterways and canals.
The Museum of Carpet takes a world of local history, and creative designs, and lays them out for visitors. Watch the thrumming of the working looms, design and make your own carpets and meet the talented carpet makers. You can dive into carpet history and enjoy the range of exhibitions throughout the year.
Take the little ones by the hand and let them wander the halls of Bewdley Museum. This interactive museum is located in a Butcher's Shambles and shines a light on the trades and crafts of the Wyre Forest region in Worcestershire. The hands-on activities in the craft studios, the brass foundry, jails and air raid shelter tours mean that any trip will be engaging.
Should the jails seem a little daunting, you can try the Worcestershire Great Maize Maze. This huge maze is set in a 10-acre field with the Malvern Hills behind and is a perfect place to let the kids explore.
Other great day trips include Droitwich Spa Lido with an outdoor heated swimming pool and beach area, or an afternoon on a Avonbelle River Boat Trip. The West Midland Safari Park is where you can spot many exotic animals and, after all that excitement, steam off into the sunset on the gentle chugging of the Evesham Vale light Railway.
