The Royal Oak is charming country pub and campsite in the Peak District, within ten minutes of Bakewell and Buxton. Choose from grass or winter hardstanding pitches for tents and small campervans, some with private picnic benches and fire pits. You can enjoy a delicious, hearty meal and a refreshing pint at the onsite pub, perfect after exploring the Tissington and High Peak Trail (with direct access from the site). Dogs are welcome too!

About the site


Just ten minutes from Bakewell and Buxton, and 20 minutes from Ashbourne, this family friendly site offers a relaxing countryside escape with direct access to the Tissington and High Peak trails. Top attractions like Chatsworth House (20 minutes) and Poole's Cavern (15 minutes) are nearby too! The camping area is situated behind the award-winning pub, making it the ideal spot to refuel after a day of walking, cycling, or exploring. Spread across two levels are 19 non electric grass pitches, each with space for one car and seven non electric hardstanding pitches. There are standard pitches (6m x 8m), large pitches (8m x 10m), and super pitches (8m x 12). These are suitable for tents and small campervans up to 5.3m in length, with super pitches offering a picnic bench and a fire pit with a BBQ grill. Please note that motorhomes, caravans, and gazebos are not permitted. Anything larger than a VW camper will not be allowed onsite. A dedicated DofE field is also available for school groups, Scouts and DofE groups year round. During the main season (April to September), this field is open Sunday to Thursday only. The Bunk Barn features two twin rooms and two four person rooms. Three rooms are located on the first floor, with one four person bedroom on the ground floor. Guests also have access to a communal kitchen (on the first floor) and shared facilities on the ground floor, accessed via an external staircase. Up to two dogs are welcome to join your stay, and the pub is dog friendly too. BBQs and fire pits are welcome as long as they are raised off the ground.

Non electric grass pitches are open from April to October while the winter grass pitches and hardstanding pitches are open from November to March. Pitches from £10/night for 2 people.

Guests have access to separate male and female toilets and hot showers, as well as a unisex facility block which opens during high season. These meal there are 11 showers and eight toilets in total. There are also four indoor and one outdoor washing up points, as well as a communal freezer for ice packs. These facilities are also shared with The Bunk Barn.

Please note that during the winter, facilities are reduced to protect against freezing temperatures. They are divided into men's and ladies' areas, featuring two toilets, three hot showers, hand wash sinks, and a washing up area.

The Royal Oak pub (open daily) is located onsite, serves food and drinks with indoor and outdoor seating. Reserving a table in advance is advised. Breakfast is available on weekends. Aldi is a ten minute drive away for picking up essentials.

Check-in at The Royal Oak is available between 2pm and 9pm. Check out is due by 11am on your final day.

Buxton is a ten minute drive from the campsite. This charming town is home to Poole's Cavern for underground tours, the Pavilion Gardens with its botanical conservatory and events, and The Buxton Crescent Experience.

Families can enjoy days out at Peak Wildlife Park (25 minutes) or Matlock Farm Park (30 minutes), both offering play areas and plenty of animals to meet and pet.

Thor's Cave, Carsington Water Visitor Centre, and National Trust - Ilam Park are all within a 25 minute drive.

History enthusiasts will appreciate Haddon Hall, located just 20 minutes away, with beautiful Elizabethan gardens and a Tudor manor to explore.
