Things to do in Matlock
Located at the Peak District's south eastern edge is the former spa town of Matlock which is also Derbyshire's county town and edges the stunning Peak District National Park.
The town shines with fun days out to suit any weather. Firstly, the charming Crich Tramway Village is not to be missed for a chance to immerse yourself in the retro feel of days gone by. All generations will enjoy exploring the National Tramway Museum, discovering a recreated period street, seeing the tram restoration process first-hand and going on open top vintage tram rides, each paid for with an old penny. There's a fantastic train option too, since a trip on Peak Rail is a great way to explore a preserved steam and diesel railway.
Beautiful Lumsdale Valley will entice nature lovers and walkers on the hunt for rainbows dancing in its waterfalls, as will Cromford Canal which is not far from Matlock. Pretty Hall Leys Park is a pleasant place to sit and relax during a day of sightseeing, if your energy levels get a bit low. The Derwent River runs alongside Matlock, lending an air of calm and tranquility to its bustling centre and leading to a secluded stone bridge, the ideal spot for watching the world go by.
Just three miles from the centre of Matlock, keen anglers will find Longacre Fishery, where lessons and day tickets are available- so see what you can catch.
Visiting the Peak District Mining Museum will teach you all about the lead mining industry in Derbyshire, with a mock mine set up so that kids can safely get into the swing of real mining life. Families should definitely make time to visit Matlock Farm Park which is home to an assortment of adorable animals and provides feeding and handling opportunities as well as fun pony rides and even exhilarating sheep and ferret races!
For families who fancy a blood pumping ride, make the day trip to Gulliver's Kingdom theme park near Matlock Bath and get some adrenaline flowing!
The nearby village of Matlock Bath is a conservation area, housing a charming Victorian teashop and the quirky Life in a Lens Museum which unfolds the history of photography. Matlock is the ideal base for wandering those areas of Derbyshire steeped in local folklore, such as the Heights of Abraham which offers tours of its secretive caverns. Lea Gardens in the village of Lea and the village of Birchover with its magical Druids Caves are also well worth exploring.
The splendid Peak District National Park will enchant anyone who is passionate about the outdoors, and is temptingly close from Matlock, while further afield visitors may also be keen to explore the town of Chesterfield and the cities of Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield.
