Things to do in Bakewell
Bakewell, idyllically situated in the Derbyshire Dales, is the sole market town within the boundary of the Peak District National Park. It boasts plenty of enticing attractions for visitors to discover, from a medieval five-arched stone bridge to a key setting in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, to which she gave the fake name, ‘Lambton’.
Towering over the town you’ll find the pretty All Saints Church, which welcomes visitors to admire its Pre-Raphaelite window and Norman arches dating back to the 1100s.
Visitors can also learn more about Bakewell's history with a trip to the Old House Museum, as well as explore Tudor architecture, see displays of historical toys and textiles and gain insight into the life of a Victorian mill worker here.
Walkers and cyclists will enjoy exploring the 8.5-mile long Monsal Trail which can be accessed from Bakewell, as well as taking the opportunity to ride beside the pretty River Wye.
Alternatively why not take to the skies in an exhilarating Virgin hot air balloon flight that starts from the Bakewell Showground and takes you to the horizon in comfort.
Of course, a trip to Bakewell wouldn't be complete without trying a tasty Bakewell pudding as well! In Bakewell’s Square you’ll find the shop that lays claim to having invented the first of these moreish treats, so it’s be a shame not to make a stop.
Nearby Chatsworth House is a stunning piece of architecture that is well worth adding to the travel itinerary. Home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, the house has over 30 rooms to explore.
Just outside of Bakewell you’ll find the Haddon Hall, which dates as far back as the 12th century. A medieval manor house with a regular red carpet appearance in Jane Austen adaptations, this is a place that knows how to wow.
Thornbridge Hall Gardens and Thornbridge Brewery, hidden in the village of Ashford in the Water, are also excellent draws just nearby. Take a tour of the riverside brewery to see the full magic of the fermentation process and then try the results.
The county town of Matlock, the spa town of Buxton, as well as the town of Chesterfield and the city of Sheffield are also situated within easy access of Bakewell. Plus its location in the Peak District National Park makes Bakewell an excellent base for exploring this amazing landscape.
