Things to do in Norwich
The city of Norwich straddles the River Wensum, just 2 hours from the capital, inviting visitors to forget the London crowds and give East Anglia a try. It boasts some memorable architecture, lays claim to being the country’s most complete Medieval city and deserves a medal for offering visitors no less than two cathedrals to wander.
First get your feet by walking Norwich’s wide streets, testing out the coffee culture and dividing your time between large department stores and the colourful market in the Guildhall. Norwich has an easy welcoming feel.
The magnificent Romanesque Norwich Cathedral and its ornate cloisters will draw your attention, but don’t forget its cousin on the other side of the city, the Cathedral of St John the Baptist. This second cathedral could be a favourite if you can stomach heights, as it offers tours of its highest tower, with eye-watering views.
Step from there over to the Church of St Peter Mancroft in the centre of town for a taste of what Norwich offered in 1430.
Strangers’ Hall, a beautifully restored Tudor house with intricate maze, should be next on your list and then the charming cobbled street of Elm Hill which is home to a strand of tipsy Tudor buildings.
Any trip would feel incomplete without a dawdle at Norwich Castle to get curious in the museum and art gallery it houses, while the Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell, and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts are all fascinating locations to visit too.
Don't miss Eaton Park which is a peaceful spot for a stroll or simply to sit and admire the surroundings. Once your energy returns, make for the Plantation Garden, known as the local secret garden and sit by its Gothic fountain. Norwich's lovely green spaces are hard to beat.
Looking for great nightlife entertainment? The Norwich Theatre Royal is a nod to the modern with some spectacular special effects in place and offers backstage tours for the curious. After that it will be time to refuel and when it comes to hearty pubs in Norwich, history is behind you- try The Murderers freehouse from 1530 or the 18th century Walpole Arms. Then, saunter down Medieval Elm Hill for cafes, delis and a host of other options.
Spreading your wings just a little will take you to Felbrigg Hall, luxurious country house with a superb estate and gardens. The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum is a great for families, while a trip to the East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden is a must for nature lovers.
Boating enthusiasts will be delighted with a leisurely exploration of the beautiful Broads by boat, while for something a bit different why not take a tour of Winbirri Vineyards.
