Sightseeing
Dumfries and Calloway is full of beautiful castles and impressive ruins. One of the most popular to visit is Caerlaverock Castle. This partially ruin castle is surrounded by a moat and offers exhibits on siege warfare. Drumlanrig Castle is another beautiful castle home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensbury. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, this picturesque castle is made of unique pink sandstone. Be sure to bring your camera!
The unusual Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura has a variety of exhibits covering the region's history. Mounted in the windmill tower, the Camera Obscura is one of the oldest working instruments in the world, providing a panoramic view of the countryside. There are trails and fun activities regularly held outside the museum.
If you travel in the autumn, stop by the annual Wigtown Book Festival in Scotland's National Book Town. Less than an hour's drive away is the nation's Artists' Town, Kirkcudbright. As the historic home of an artists' colony, Kirkcudbright is well worth a visit.
Activities
A nature lover's dream, Dumfries and Galloway is home to four National Nature Reserves: Silver Flowe, Caerlaverock, Cairnsmore of Fleet and Kirkconnell Flow. The largest in Britain and part of the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, Galloway Forest Park is a perfect place to observe wildlife during the day and stars at night.
One of the best ways to explore this region is to partake in one of the annual walking festivals held each summer. There are numerous hiking and cycling trails through the Moffat, Lowther and Galloway Hills.
Walkers will also love exploring the 200 mile Solway Coast Heritage Trail, including the birth place of Robert Burns and finishing at the Mull of Galloway's large seabird colony.
Sampling some famous Scottish whisky on one of this region's many distillery tours might be another treat, and there are also plenty of opportunities to taste locally brewed cider and traditionally crafted ales.
For golfers, Dumfries and Galloway is home to three excellent trails, the Tiger, Challenge and Little Gems Trails, each featuring courses of varying difficulty and length.
