Things to do in Aviemore

Home to wildcats and capercaillie birds in the Highlands of Scotland is the town of Aviemore, ringed with secluded lochs. You’re looking at a prime getaway destination for nature lovers and anyone who is keen to get active outdoors, with plenty of family-friendly attractions too.

Sitting pretty in the stunning Cairngorms National Park and the town is a major destination for anyone who revels in the term ‘outdoorsy’. During the warmer months Aviemore is an excellent base to explore the surrounding areas by bike or on foot.

Thanks to a wide choice of walking and cycling routes to suit almost any level of experience and fitness, everyone can enjoy this dazzling Scottish landscape.

The fun doesn't stop in winter - quite the opposite actually. Aviemore is a mecca for snowsport enthusiasts who get on board for skiing and snowboarding on nearby CairnGorm Mountain. Lessons are available for both beginners and experienced snowboarders and skiers, so there's no need to miss out on these exciting activities.

Keen to explore the mountain in a way that packs in the sightseeing and cuts out the huffing and puffing? Then don't miss a trip on the CairnGorm Mountain Funicular Railway, the only railway of its kind in Scotland and packed with panoramic views and an embodiment of the saying ‘the journey’s half the fun’.

Other exciting activities are also on offer such as kayaking, white water rafting, rock climbing and mountain biking with G2 Outdoor. These are great group activities, so why not go canyoning in the depths of Scotland or zip line across the Highlands?

Plus there are excellent options for golfing too, with unbelievably scenic backdrops. There are 12 courses in the Cairngorms, more than anyone could reasonably need.

Families will have a wonderful day out at TreeZone with thrilling high ropes courses, as well as whizzing through the trees at Zip Line Park. A trip to the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre is a chance to wow little ones with thoughts of Santa- ‘have you been naughty or nice?’- any time of the year. After that, Cairngorm Sleddog Centre is a must for animal lovers, who will get up close with the magnificent creatures and experience a thrilling sleigh ride.

There are also many other wildlife experiences to enjoy, such as day trips with Speyside Wildlife which get you up close with the local animal inhabitants.

It's not all about exploring outdoors though. If you're looking for something a bit different get informed and do some much-needed tasting at the Cairngorm Brewery. Also well worth visiting is beautiful Rothiemurchus and Loch an Eilein with its strikingly situated 13th century castle.

The Highland Wildlife Park and Inverness are also less than an hour away by car from Aviemore.
