Things to do in Weston-super-Mare
There is much to see in Weston that will please families and nature lovers. One of the most popular attractions is the Grand Pier, a pleasure pier where the rides and attractions deliver thrills for both younger and older visitors. The Grand Pier is open daily from 10am, except for Christmas Day.
Weston-super-Mare beach is one of the longest and naturally occurring beaches in the UK. There are plenty of events on the seafront throughout the year, including the Pro Nationals, Weston Beach Race, Weston-super-Mare Air Festival and various music concerts. In addition to the sand and sea, the beach offers traditional donkey rides and children's rides.
The beaches are safe for little ones, set far back from the road with the perfect sand to make spectacular sandcastles! Hire a deckchair if you'd prefer to just sit and watch the world go by, while reading the paper and enjoying the warm sun on your face. The flat expanse means that both the sands and the prom are great for a stroll too, even for the less mobile.
Sticking by the sea is the Weston Sand Sculpture Fesitval, where you can see spectacular sand sculptures created by world renowned sculptors. And don’t miss the SeaQuarium, with over 30 exhibits and a range of freshwater, marine and tropical species from around the world. Ten different zones include a tropical reef zone with puffer fish, rainforest river zone with piranhas and an underwater ocean tunnel with sharks!
Then there’s the Water Adventure Play Park. This seasonal splash pad has fountains and sprays triggered by sensors and buttons. Watch your children shriek with delight as they try to dodge the rain shower and get soaked by a sprinkler! Once thev’re dried off they can continue their fun on the wooden play equipment, which includes a Stockholm castle, double cable way and a toddler area. There’s also a sand pit, a climbing pyramid and a snake swing.
For older children the Weston-Super-Mare Treasure Trail is a 2.5 hour circular self guided walking trail and treasure hunt, just one of over 30 brilliant treasure trails designed for families and friends to share in the experience of discovering beautiful, fun and historic locations in Somerset. Why not work out a secret code in the Spy Mission Trail, or discover whodunnit in a Detective Mystery Trail. The kids won't realise the exercise they're getting as they enjoy hunting for answers to the clues!
Nearby Brean Leisure Park is also a great day out for families, with lots of fun attractions to enjoy. Likewise, Puxton Park will please families with its cute animals, indoor and outdoor play areas, and miniature railway. Court Farm Country Park is Somerset’s top farm attraction and your kids can meet some of their favourite animals or ride a tractor. There’s also a range of great play facilities for kids of all ages.
Keen to escape the hustle and bustle of the seafront for a bit? Pretty and relaxing outdoor areas to discover include Ellenborough Park, Madeira Cove, as well as nearby Uphill Local Nature Reserve, beautiful Sand Bay, Worlebury Hill and the attractive promontory of Brean Down.
There are some stunning sunsets throughout the whole year too, so if you are away with a loved one or have a keen photography hobby, nothing is more romantic than a walk along the front as the sun goes down.
A trip to the island of Steep Holm, a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest, is another option.
