Things to do in Cheddar
Starting in the village itself, The Cheddar Treasure Hunt Trail offers a self guided tour. The trail should take around two hours to polish off and begins at the entrance to Gough’s Cave, before winding through the scenic village streets.
It’s hard to mention Cheddar and not think of cheese, so stop off at the visitor centre in Cheddar where you can watch them make, mature and pack their cheese. It's enough to make anyone fancy a nibble!
The famous Cheddar Gorge is a must to visit. Explore one of Britain's most spectacular, dramatic natural landmarks. From its awe-inspiring cliffs to its extraordinary subterranean stalactite show caves. It is also an international centre for caving and rock climbing.
The Mendip Activity Centre offers many fun ways to spend your family day out. Everything from frisbee golf to kayaking, tobogganing to bush craft and raft building to skiing.
Deep in the heart of the Mendip Hills you will find Wookey Hole, the UK’s largest cave system. It’s a series of limestone caverns, a show cave and tourist attraction all rolled into one action packed day out.
Cheddar Crazy Golf, in its attractive setting offers 18 challenging yet fun holes.
Just out of Cheddar you’ll find North Somerset Butterfly House, a secret paradise in the heart of the West Country where you can surround yourself with some of the world's most beautiful butterflies, massive moths, and exotic plants. The indoor butterfly jungle is the perfect place for families to discover and explore tropical insects and plants, with an imaginatively laid out space to wander.
The historic town of Axbridge lies a couple of miles to the west. The medieval market square and its narrow streets are worthy of a visit.
Between Cheddar and Axbridge lies the two-mile-circumference Cheddar Reservoir which is a popular destination for water sports fans, birdwatchers, walkers and cyclists.
A little further afield and on the coast at Weston-Super-Mare is Court Farm Country Park, Somerset’s top, award winning farm attractions. Kids can meet some of their favourite animals or ride a tractor around the farms. There’s also a range of great play facilities for kids of all ages.
