Tucked away in a corner of the North York Moors National Park ( a Dark Skies Reserve) Cockerdale offers two cosy, ensuite shepherd's huts (made by Plankbridge), with kingsize beds and private wood-fired hot tubs. Ideal for couples seeking a peaceful getaway, enjoy watching the local wildlife and exploring the Moors on foot, bike or car.

About the site


A hidden gem in the beautiful North York Moors National Park. Enjoy the dark skies and the walks through the 85 acres of the estate and woodland beyond. Wild deer are frequent visitors outside the huts along with badgers and a whole array of birds. Located just outside the village of Oldstead - home of the Michelin starred restaurant the Black Swan this is a perfect location to enjoy many other fine restaurants and pubs - The Abbey Inn, Byland, Myse Hovingham, The Fauconberg Coxwold to town of Helmsley is 15 mins drive away - as is Thirsk the home of James Herriot. Beyond this there are many other interesting places to visit including Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall. The Yorkshire coast is only just over an hour away - reachable via what is what is described as one of the most scenic drives in England. There are two shepherd's huts, each with a king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom, a video player, a fully equipped kitchenette, and a private wood-fired hot tub for those evenings under the stars. Bedding and towels are included for your stay. BBQs are welcome in the fire pits provided. Well behaved dogs can also join your stay (if they are kept on a lead due to the livestock).

Both huts feature an ensuite bathroom with an electric radiator for heated towels, a shower, and a hairdryer. The fully equipped kitchenette includes a sink, fridge, oven, hob, kettle, toaster, crockery and cutlery.

Outside the lodges, there are private wood-fired hot tubs, outdoor seating, and a BBQ grill.

Essentials such as bread, butter, jam, biscuits, milk, tea and coffee are provided, but Morrisons Daily or Co-Op Food is a 15 minute drive away. Farm Gate Farm Shop and Free Range Butchery is also 15 minutes away, open Fridays and Saturdays from 9am until 2pm. The Black Swan pub is a 20 minute stroll from the site, serving food and drinks.

Features a king bed (bedding provided), TV, storage, and ensuite bathroom with a heated radiator and hairdryer. The kitchenette has a fridge, oven, hob, sink, kettle, toaster, and crockery. Outside is a BBQ pit, wood-fired hot tub and seating.


* Check-in is from 4pm until 10pm. Departure is before 11am on your last day.

* Small dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead around the farms and fields with livestock.

* Parties and events are not permitted.

Cockerdale is a secret hidden valley on the edge of the North York Moors National Park.

Surrounded by nature - including an abundance of wildlife it is a peaceful haven away from the busy-ness of modern day life.

The quiet days and beautiful dark stars enable you to unwind and relax - either in or out of the private wood fired hot tubs.

The huts themselves are things of beauty, made by Plankbridge, the only hut manufacturer endorsed by the RHS and offer all of the comforts you need

Things to do on site and in the Oldstead area

Walking, cycling, nature watching - relaxing - if you just want to escape from everyday life come to Cockerdale

Ideally located for exploring historical landmarks - Kilburn White Horse is five minutes from the site, home to the largest of England's horse figures, and Byland Abbey (5 minutes) offers medieval ruins and a pub opposite.

Helmsley and its castle is fifteen minutes away with archaeological tours and gardens. Castle Howard is located 30 minutes away with landscaped grounds with fountains, trails, and lakes.

The North York Moors National Park Centre is ten minutes from the site, offering natural beauty with wildlife, history, and many outdoor activities including 'the most beautiful view in England - according to Alf Wright (aka James Herriot)

Hike or cycle across the scenic moorland, including the famous Cleveland Way. Historic attractions include the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, the Yorkshire Moors Railway, and lovely villages such as Goathland.

National Trust - Nunnington Hall (20 minutes) are nearby for peaceful strolls. Nuttington Hall also has art exhibitions and house tours.

For those after a sea breeze, the seaside town of Whitby is 60 minutes away, with a charming beach and popular landmark Whitby Abbey, home to the first known English poet.
