Nestled on the edge of the North York Moors and just a half hour drive to the pretty Yorkshire coastline, Swallowtails offers idyllic glamping and camping breaks surrounded by the Vale of Pickering countryside. With plenty of outdoor activities during the holidays, this is fuss-free glamping in a range of luxury and spacious yurts, or pitch on one of the nine grass and gravel pitches of varying sizes with electric and your own water supply.

About the site


Standing in a 1.5 acre field situated on the edge of the Pickering and North York Moors National Park, the site is home to a range of grass and gravel pitches suitable for tents, campervans and motorhomes (up to 7m long) and ensuite glamping yurts. A welcoming and family and dog friendly hideaway just outside of Pickering (10 minutes), take in the views and start planning your adventures to the moors or Howardian Hills on your doorstep here. Comfort is the priority, with every yurt providing plenty of space and well insulated. All yurts include a king sized bed as well as additional single beds in the form of a daybed and trundle bed, plus an outdoor kitchen area for alfresco dining. Please note, bedding is provided! The owners here also run a wide variety of activities for the holidays, hosting regular pizza evenings, yoga, arts and crafts for little ones and more. It's an ideal base for families or for those looking for outdoor adventures. Up to two well behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead onsite and not be left in tents on their own.

Site facilities include toilets, family shower room, a children's play area plus activity days and outdoor games equipment including giant jenga, badminton net, rackets etc as well as table tennis table with rackets and balls. Communal campfire area onsite and wood-fired hot tub available to hire.

A shack onsite is stocked with supplies.

As owners, we have enjoyed camping and glamping ourselves for many years with our growing family and as a couple. We know exactly what you will need for a comfortable stay with us.

Insulated and luxurious Lotus Belle tents are spacious and quipped with king size beds and two single beds in the form of daybeds and pull out single trundle bed. Each one sleeps up to five with an extra camp bed and bedding.

4 x 18ft Yurts

Luxury insulated yurts are spacious and airy with windows and skylights. All have king size beds and two single beds in the form of a daybeds and pull out single trundle bed. All yurts have their own toilets and one yurt has ensuite facilities.

22ft Yurt

Max 7 people

Large and insulated yurt is extremely spacious, light and airy with windows and skylights for stargazing. King size bed and four single beds in the form of a daybeds and pull out single trundle beds, sleeping up to seven, and its own toilet.

*Glamping check ins are normally after 4pm on your arrival day, and pitch arrivals are after 2pm. Please try to arrive before 7pm, check out should be by 11am for glapers and 12pm for campers - please check your booking email.

*Up to two well behaved dogs are allowed, but they must not be left on their own onsite and should sleep on their own bed or in a cage if staying in a yurt.

*Noise should be kept to a minimum after 10pm and quiet time after 11pm. They do not allow the use of speakers of any size on the campsite to preserve the tranquillity of the site unless the whole campsite is booked exclusively.

Wood can be brought onto the campsite if it is bought/bagged firewood. There is a wood supply shack on site, too.

*Please recycle items in the appropriate bins.

*No ball games/frisbees to avoid balls being kicked into someone's BBQ, but badminton, swingball and beach balls are fine. The site provides badminton and table tennis equipment onsite.

*On arrival, please ring the back doorbell of the main house. Free parking for cars in the visitors' car park. Parking is allowed next to the pitches. Glampers park in the car park to minimise traffic on the camping site.

*Advance booking is advisable for all glamping and camping.

*Additional visitors to the site must check in for Health and Safety reasons.

*There is a fridge freezer provided for you to freeze your freezer blocks for standard cool boxes.

*Please ensure you leave your yurt in the same condition as on your arrival on departure.


Things to do on site and in the Pickering area

There's a wide range of activities to get involved with here - in fact, the site appeared in The Guardian's list of the best UK camping holidays with activities!

The programme of activities runs during the school holidays, weather permitting, with plenty to keep little ones occupied including art workshops, nature walks and pizza evenings.

Pizza nights run Wednesdays and Fridays and are open to all campers, offering the chance to build your own tasty creations, while art sessions are run by Freya - a fully qualified art teacher! Sessions for adults only can also be privately booked. Pre-booking activities is advised.

Why not also book yourself in for a yoga class and take your holiday to the next level. All classes are suitable for anyone aged over 4 years.

Dalby Forest has a network of cycling trails catering to scenic pedals or more challenging rides. And don't miss a visit to bustling Pickering with its abundance of eateries and a ride aboard a steam train on the North York Moors Railway. From the station you can reach Whitby's seaside or soak up the history at York.
