Things to do in Exeter
Exeter's 12th century cathedral is a must see, and you could take a tour up to the roof or the tower to see as much as possible, while excellent audio guides are available if you fancy exploring on your own. The Exeter Guildhall also offers a chance to explore the area's history, and is the starting point for The Exeter Woollen Trail, a self-guided track though the city (you can pick up a paper copy of the map).
At the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and art gallery, kids will be blown away by life-sized examples of an African bull elephant, a huge suspended whale, and Gerald the giraffe.
Topsham Museum focuses on more local history and another option is to explore the fascinating medieval passages under Exeter High Street that date from the 14th century on an underground passage tour. If all that history has you pooped out, Topsham Outdoor Swimming Pool is a great way to cool down with a swim in the summer months.
For more active fun, check out Saddles & Paddles where you can hire a bike, canoe or kayak to explore the city. Or visit Quay Climbing Centre with its Clip 'n Climb attraction, which is great indoor fun for all with bright coloured grips and themed walls.
A more leisurely way to while away the hours is to take a stroll around Exeter Quayside and nose at the boats on the River Exe. There are a variety of cafes; bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a pint and watch the world go by. Likewise, The Exeter Sculpture walk is also a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
Sightseers who are keen to explore beyond Exeter have a variety of interesting options. Just outside of Exeter is Powderham Castle and the National Trust property of Killerton House which has lots for all ages to enjoy. Alternatively, if you're curious about the wine-making process, you could visit Pebblebed Vineyard for a tasting.
Go Ape at Haldon Forest Park and Devon's Crealy Great Adventure Park are fun days out for families, while those interested in the great outdoors will enjoy exploring Haldon Forest Park, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and Dartmoor National Park (with its wild ponies).
The coastal towns of Exmouth and Sidmouth offer plenty of seaside fun and beaches for building sandcastles on.
