Things to do in Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot Racecourse remains one of the top attractions in South Devon. Located on the north bank of the district’s River Teign, this is an opportunity to witness incredible races for an afternoon during your stay. Aside from the races, however, there are car boot sales and antique fairs taking place at the racecourse each month.
The Bear Feet Playcentre is a great place for a fun family experience. Kids can indulge in the ball pools but even teenagers (and adults) can re-embrace childhood in this 8000 square foot soft play area.
A walk through the Decoy Country Park is not to be missed. Located on the edge of Newton Abbot, this nature reserve has both a lake that allows for water sports as well as fascinating inhabitants. It caters for the whole family during the summer holidays. The park’s wildlife also make for lovely company whilst embarking on a quiet walk or settling down for a picnic.
If the kids are after a closer look at the animals, be sure to take them to Prickly Ball Farm. Helping to bottle feed lambs and meeting donkeys will give children an experience they won’t likely forget in a hurry. Goats, chickens and rabbits are just a few of the encounters the farm offers.
After meeting the animals and enjoying a quiet picnic, consider cooling off at Chudleigh Lido. The solar heated outdoor pool is open for both locals and newcomers to the area during the summer. Operated by the Chudleigh Community Project, you can find this hidden gem on the grounds of the primary school. Its low chlorine water means you don’t have to worry about the kids reacting to the water.
Plan an action-packed day out at the Milky Way Adventure Park. Rollercoasters such as the Cosmic Typhoon are sure to send thrills into the whole family.
Keen cyclists should embark upon the Stover Trail. The traffic free route (and flat terrain) ensures a safe cycle for youngsters and is a peaceful activity that the whole family can enjoy.
Bird enthusiasts should not miss out on a visit to the Devon Bird of Prey Centre. This experience introduces you to their resident birds which include eagles, hawks and owls. There is also the centre’s must-see ‘Valley of the Eagles’ demonstration giving you the chance to see these birds of prey in action.
If staying for a long weekend, a visit to Dartmoor National Park is essential. Its breath-taking open landscape is perfect for family walks or romantic strolls.
Squeeze in time to visit the various Newton Abbot markets. These are a great way of seeing a wide range of items and absorbing some of the local life in the process. The markets take place throughout the week in the centre of Newton Abbot.
Make the most of Newton Abbot’s convenient location by strolling through the seaside town of Teignmouth or classic Victorian architecture in Torquay.
