Things to do in Whitby

The seaside gem, Whitby, hugging a pristine Yorkshire beach, offers visitors a sandy break beside the coast with some unique twists. Make time for Whitby Beach and Sandsend Beach which will appeal to walkers, fossil hunters and sandcastle builders alike. Then, dig into oysters straight from the seafront you’ve just visited, Whitby’s rough coastline is dotted with oyster parlours.

Starting with the most famous spot in Whitby’s gothic past, Whitby Abbey is a breath-taking sight - and if you visit them at dusk it's not hard to see how it inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.

By contrast, restless Whitby Harbour with its boats and swing bridge is also a great place to discover at a leisurely pace. The town you see is calming, and filled with little crooked houses.

Alternatively swap out water and sand for firmer ground and explore the beautiful Pannett Park which hosts an art gallery inside and runs regular theme events.

Visitors can also enjoy an excellent day out discovering the local museums such as Whitby Museum and the RNLI Lifeboat Museum, while the fantastic Museum of Victorian Science is slightly further afield but definitely worth the trip.

Outdoor enthusiasts don't have far to travel in order to reach superb nearby natural attractions, just behind Whitby lies the North York Moors National Park and the beautiful Yorkshire Coast. It's as if they're inviting visitors to reach out and start exploring.

The most famous English explorer of all hailed from Whitby, himself, as this is the town that brought us Captain James Cook. He’s rewarded with his own museum in Grape Lane, where you can re-live his epic voyages.

A little outside Whitby, Sneaton Forest contains the pretty Falling Foss waterfall and a delightfully situated tearoom for tasty treats before or after your visit.

In addition, visitors who are keen to extend their travels can explore the seaside town of Scarborough for its castle and the pretty fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay where pony trekking on the beach is available.

If you’re ready for a longer journey, the beautiful historic city of York is well worth the effort.
