Things to do in Lyme Regis
Often referred to as the ‘Pearl of Dorset’, Lyme Regis is the ideal coastal destination for families, couples, solo travellers and fossil enthusiasts. Set along the Jurassic Coast on the Dorset–Devon border, this gateway town offers stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and unmissable viewpoints. It’s a place where you can truly unwind while also experiencing the cultural and fossil heritage that has shaped England’s story. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set around the mouth of the River Lim with scenic locations, action-packed attractions and popular foodie spots, Lyme Regis promises memories that will stay with you forever.
One of the most exciting draws lies in its fossil heritage, from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (the Age of Dinosaurs). Much of this history centres around Mary Anning, famous for discovering the first complete ichthyosaur fossil (a large extinct marine animal) at just thirteen years old, and you can visit her statue at the end of Long Entry and Gun Cliff Walk. To learn more, the Lyme Regis Museum (built on the site of Mary Anning’s former home) is an essential stop. After soaking in the views across Lyme Bay, step inside to explore interactive galleries, trails and exhibitions that bring the town’s story to life. The Philpot Museum and Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre also provide a similar historical experience, and if you're visiting over summer, make your way over to the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival to celebrate its fossil roots further. For younger visitors, the Dinosaur Fossil Museum and the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium are always a hit. If you’d like to take home a reminder of your visit, The Lyme Fossil Shop offers a selection of fossils and gifts.
Despite its small size, the town offers four beaches. Days along the shoreline can include rock pooling, stone skimming, paddling, fossil hunting and long afternoons building sandcastles. Families can visit Front Beach, the town’s main sandy stretch, located beside Cobb Harbour, which holds literary ties to Jane Austin. Lifeguards patrol here in peak season, colourful beach huts line the promenade, and you can enjoy coastal walks. To the west of the harbour lies Monmouth Beach, a mainly shingle bay popular with fossil hunters. Walk along here at low tide for the Lyme Regis Fossil Beach (Ammonite Pavement), and you might be lucky enough to find your own fossil. After catching a show or event at the Marine Theatre, many visitors wander down to Church Cliff Beach, where low tide reveals incredible rock pools. Further east is East Cliff Beach, another fossil-rich area that leads towards Charmouth. And if you need a refreshing treat after exploring, grab an ice cream from one of the many shops along the seafront!
The fun doesn’t stop there, as there are plenty of water-based activities to keep everyone entertained. Enjoy kayaking, try your hand at fishing, or, for something more fast-paced, hop aboard a Lyme Bay RIB Ride. These journeys take you along the coastline, offering views of Golden Cap, coves and limestone cliffs. From Victoria Pier, you can also join Jurassic Boat Trips for a relaxing hour-long sail towards Charton Bay, with stunning views across Stonebarrow and Black Ven. With a bit of luck, you might even spot dolphins offshore, seabirds and other marine life. For an unforgettable experience, head out at sunset and take in the panoramic views.
If you’re looking for things to do on land, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Visit Lyme Regis Brewery, or enjoy friendly rounds at Lyme Regis Mini Golf and Table Tennis, Lyme Regis Golf Club and Jurassic Footgolf. Let the kids blow off steam at Lyme Regis Amusements, home to arcade games, air hockey, rides and head-to-head challenges.
Langmoor & Lister Gardens offer a peaceful, nature-filled experience where you can wander among landscaped lawns, cherry blossoms and mature trees. Wander the cobbled town centre to reach The Town Mill and spot the working watermill in action. While there, explore the independent shops in the Town Mill Courtyard, including art galleries, a silversmith workshop and the Town Mill Bakery. For a bite to eat, enjoy beachfront views at restaurants along the seafront, try the seafood, or relax in one of the local pubs.
For walkers, the town is a gateway to some of the most impressive coastal and countryside routes in the Southwest. Start at the Town Mill and enjoy a peaceful 1.5-mile stroll along the River Lym Path, spotting wildlife along the way. Within the town, the Lyme Regis Town Trail guides visitors through layers of history, Georgian architecture and the tranquil Lym Valley. The South West Coast Path also passes directly through Lyme Regis, offering views over the sea and access to nearby towns and coves. The 7-mile Undercliff walk is another popular route that takes you through the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve. More gentle options include the Liberty Trail and several circular walks by Liz Jones. Just outside the town lies the Church Cliff Walk. And if you fancy something more informative, you can join a guided walking tour.
Whether you're here to relax, learn, explore or simply enjoy the sea air, this remarkable town leaves a lasting impression.
