Things to do in Corfe Castle
Corfe Castle is a little village with a long and fascinating past, so make the most of your hard earned holiday and get exploring.
Its ancient castle was constructed on the orders of William the Conqueror and dates back to the 10th Century. It now stands as one of the most iconic battle scarred survivors of the English civil war. A visit to the castle could involve taking part in one of the National Trust days, where you can experience archery or enactments of the Saxon and Viking wars that took place. Take part and shoot a bow of your own or just walk around the ruins and feel the history of wars and sieges that took place there.
Next head to see the Corfe Castle model village which is just 1/20 of the actual size of the real one. You’ll definitely feel like a giant, and you could even take part in Giant games. There’s a fairy garden too, as well as working stock and croquet, all set in rolling countryside.
The more adventurous amongst you are sure to love Dorset Waterpark, an outdoor wet and wild woodland waterpark that includes bridges and balance beams, Gladiator style activities, trampolines and much more.
At the Gallery for 41 in the village centre, art lovers will enjoy seeing a mix of local Dorset artists work, or you could head to the Boilerhouse Gallery which includes artwork also made of wood, textiles, photography, sculpture and more.
Enjoy a ride on a steam train at the Swanage Railway, or explore one of the many walks around the village on foot, following the wooden signs that indicate public footpaths. Failing that, bike hire is available from Cyclexperience in the village centre, you can enjoy horse-riding along the beaches to the south, or if you feel a little more adventurous even take to the ocean in Swanage and go diving and snorkeling.
Further afield, the Jurassic Coast stretches an enormous 96 miles across the south coast of England, with some amazing fossil history. You could also visit the Tank Museum or Weymouth’s stunning white sandy beach.
