Things to do in Weymouth
Set along Dorset’s stunning Jurassic Coast, Weymouth is a true seaside gem. You’ll find golden beaches, coastal walks, centuries of history and adventures for all the family at this lively coastal town.
At its heart lies the award-winning Weymouth Beach. With shallow, gentle waters and miles of sand, this is the perfect place for endless family fun. For a proper seaside experience, don’t miss the Punch and Judy shows, donkey rides and fun fair, or why not hire a pedalo for a leisurely paddle around the bay. You’ll also find a whole host of other watersports here, with paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and even SUP Yoga on offer. A short stroll from the beach is Weymouth Harbour. Take a boat trip through Weymouth Bay into Portland Harbour, walk along the cobbled streets or stop in one of the many pubs and cafes lining the waterfront.
Beyond the waves, Lodmoor Country Park has something for everyone, blending nature, fun and family-friendly attractions. Experience the amazing sand sculptures at Sandworld, or try creating your own masterpieces! Sea Life Weymouth is sure to be a hit with mini marine enthusiasts, with 13 different zones, a rock pool, an ocean tunnel and an adventure playground. There’s also the Rio Grande Railway circling the events area, Pirate Adventure Golf and a Tree Trail to explore. Next to the park is the RSPB Lodmoor Nature Reserve, where you can discover a variety of habitats on a flat circular walk.
Weymouth is also home to a wealth of historical attractions to help bring the past to life. Nothe Fort combines stunning views, family-friendly events and a maze of underground tunnels to explore. Just keep an eye out for the whistling gunner, the fort’s resident ghost! Sandsfoot Castle and Gardens is also a must-do for history fans. Walk around the ruins of this Tudor castle and relax in the Green Flag-awarded gardens. Both the Tudor House Museum and the Military Museum offer a journey through the history of the town, with artefacts and interactive displays to discover. There’s also a self-guided historical trail around the town centre, taking in famous landmarks such as the Jubilee Clock and the King’s Statue.
Theatre fans won’t want to miss catching a show at Weymouth Pavilion, or for a unique way to see the town, The Weymouth Fossil Trail is a free walking route where you can search for fossil installations throughout the town centre. Of course, the Jurassic Coast is one of the best places to find real-life fossils too, explore the rockpools at Bowleaze Cove and Redcliff Point in search of your own prehistoric souvenir!
There’s plenty more for nature lovers to discover here too, with Weymouth belonging to both the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and West Dorset Heritage Coast. The RSPB Radipole Lake Reserve is a bird watcher’s paradise and home to a range of wildlife, with the Discovery Centre offering activities for the whole family to enjoy. Whilst Greenhill Gardens and Bennetts Water Gardens both have green spaces, beautiful flowers and family-friendly trails to explore.
Weymouth is a top spot for walkers, with a variety of scenic walks on offer. The Rodwell Trail from Weymouth to the Isle of Portland is ideal for walkers and cyclists, passing inland through the countryside along a former railway line - don’t miss the famous Portland Bill Lighthouse at the end of the trail! For a more challenging hike, the South West Coastal Path from Weymouth to Lulworth Cove offers coastal views and the chance to explore the iconic Durdle Door.
For more adventures just outside of Weymouth, visit the 18 mile Chesil Beach, running from Abbotsbury to Portland. This world heritage site is the longest shingle beach in the UK and connects Portland to the mainland. Abbotsbury Swannery and Subtropical Gardens are also both a must-visit whilst you’re in Abbotsbury. The Swannery is home to the world’s only managed colony of nesting Mute Swans and also has a willow swan maze, seasonal trails and a playground. The Subtropical Gardens stretch over 30 acres and showcase more than 6,000 plant species from around the world, the perfect peaceful escape.
After so much to explore, you won’t want to miss the food and drink on offer here. Weymouth is known for its fresh seafood, with scallops and crab being particular local favourites. A catch of the day is a highlight in many pubs and restaurants here, with fish and chips also being a foodie favourite! No visit to the area would be complete without a Dorset Cream Tea, with local treats including Dorset Knobs and Dorset Apple Cake. There are also lots of regional ales and ciders on the menu in many of the local pubs, and of course, there’s plenty of ice cream to try!
Whether you’re chasing sunsets, collecting fossils or soaking up the seaside charm, Weymouth is a classic British resort that will have you returning with your bucket and spade year after year.
