Things to do in Bridport
Bridport is located close to the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which stretches for 96 miles across the south coast of England and is world famous for fossils. It's not all about history though, the coastline has a range of great walks, coves and beaches to discover too.
West Bay Harbour is a must see and boasts a beautiful pebble beach that is an ideal spot for a picnic. It's a working harbor and a great place to watch the fishing boats bringing in the catch of the day. The resort of West Bay is also home to TV drama Broadchurch of course.
Just along the coast at Burton Bradstock you'll find Hive Beach, an attractive beach of coarse sand. If you're feeling adventurous, try your hand at scuba diving here or opt for an adrenaline filled speed boat tour of the coastline.
Hive Beach is also part of the South West Coast Path of course, which runs for an impressive 630 miles around the South West of England. There is a great 1.9 mile walk around the towering cliffs here, packed full of history from when allied troops practiced climbing for the D-Day landings.
Walkers will also enjoy a visit to the nearby Golden Cap Estate. The area provides fantastic coastal views, and the 191 metre climb up to the top of Golden Cap will reward you with fantastic photo opportunities. It's the highest point in the south of England.
If you don’t fancy a hike but still want to get outdoors and see the countryside, Jurassic Electric offer guided electric bike tours that guarantee you a great time, without the sweat or sore muscles.
Back in Bridport, shoppers will enjoy the hustle and bustle of the market with its wide variety of stalls - a great opportunity to pick up a souvenir of your trip. Art lovers should head to the Bridport Arts Centre with its range of music, theatre, dance and comedy shows and interesting exhibitions. Sladers Yard Gallery also has a fine range of contemporary British art, crafts and furniture as well as a cafe.
The Bridport Museum has a range of fascinating collections and provides an insight into the history of the town and the surrounding area. Not far from the town is the Mangerton Mill, a 17th century working water mill which houses the Museum of Rural Bygones and holds occasional auctions.
Thirsty after a long day exploring? Head to Palmers Brewery, where you can take a tour and discover the fascinating brewing process, then enjoy a refreshing beer tasting session at the end. The brewery has been creating local ales since 1794.
Nearby, the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre has a fascinating fossil collections, with Lyme Regis just a little further on. Head past Weymouth in the other direction for Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door - two of the area's true highlights.
Do make time for a trip to Abbotsbury too. It's barely any distance along the coast and the swannery there is fascinating (go at feeding time), Young families will also love Abbotsbury Children’s Farm.
