Things to do in Fort William
Known as ‘the outdoor capital of the UK’, begin your stay at Fort William by trekking up the tallest mountain in the UK. Bring your hiking boots and, if you’re up for the challenge, spend the day heading to the peak of Ben Nevis. At the top you’ll be rewarded with incredible views over the Highlands as well as Lochaber.
If the weather is too harsh to reach the peak, get your climbing fix at 3 Wise Monkeys Climbing Centre. Anyone from beginners to professionals can have a go at testing their strength on the climbing walls whilst those who are happier watching can enjoy a hot cuppa and a bite at the café.
Afterwards, hop on board the Jacobite steam train. Admire the stunning scenery as you pass Ben Nevis as well as Loch Morar. Youngsters will love crossing over the Glenfinnan viaduct as they recognise Harry Potter’s route to Hogwarts.
Or hike through the gorge in Glen Nevis. Follow the river to see the Lower Falls before walking further to take in the incredible Steall Falls – one of Scotland’s highest waterfalls!
You can also see the sights in a different way by taking the Fort William Mystery Treasure Trail. Explore the town centre and solve all the clues hidden on various monuments in this fun way of exploring Fort William.
When you’ve found the answer to the final clue, head to the Nevis Centre. The little ones can enjoy jumping on the bouncy castle as well as diving into the ball pit or aim for a strike in the bowling alley.
Or take the kids to Treasures of the Earth. Admire the stunning light effects in the UV cave and soak up the history as you wander through recreated mines and caves to see the impressive collection of fossils and crystals.
Continue your history tour with a visit to the West Highland Museum. Discover more about ancient crime and punishment when looking at the neck irons whilst those interested in military history will love the cannonballs and shields on display.
After soaking up the history, get some fresh air and explore the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle. Head into the keep and look at Comyn’s Tower before strolling by the River Lochy to find a spot to enjoy your picnic.
Fort William also isn’t far from the beautiful scenery at Cairngorms National Park or head to Fort Augustus and take in the breathtaking views down Loch Ness.
