Things to do in Glencoe
The village of Glencoe is set within Lochaber Geopark, and is described as one of Scotland's most scenic landscapes, famous for its towering mountains (Munros), steep-sided valleys, waterfalls, iconic features, and rich history. The glen was formed millions of years ago during a volcanic eruption, and today it offers stunning viewpoints that attract visitors from all over the world.
Set in the West Highlands where the River Coe meets Loch Leven, with much of it owned by the National Trust, Glencoe (Gleann Comhann in Gaelic) offers the perfect base for exploring the Lochaber region, often known as the "outdoor capital of the UK". Campsites in Glencoe welcome road trippers, hikers, photographers, and adventure seekers year round, providing a mix of nature, scenery, and outdoor activities all packed into one small area.
With easy access via the A82, visitors can reach Glencoe's village centre, where they’ll find a handful of local attractions, shops, and pubs. Begin at the Glencoe Visitor Centre, next to The Turf House Glencoe, an ideal starting point that gives a simple introduction to the area's wildlife, landscapes, and the story of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre. A short walk away is the Glencoe Folk Museum, set within traditional 19th-century cottages and offering an immersive look into local heritage through displays, exhibitions, and more. As you explore this village, you will also pass the historical Glencoe War Memorial and the MacDonald Memorial.
In the afternoon, wander to the bottom end of the village and enjoy a quiet, scenic walk along the shores of Loch Leven, backed by rugged mountain views and surrounded by greenery. Sit down for a picnic, take in the panoramic views from the Loch Leven viewpoint, or watch the local wildlife as it passes by.
A short drive out into the glen takes you to the famous White Cottage (Wee White House / Lagangarbh Hut), sitting beneath the dramatic peak of Buachaille Etive Mòr, a favourite spot for photographers. There are many walking routes around this mountain and along the River Coupall. The Three Sisters Viewpoint is another must-see, especially for wild swimming, giving views of the peaks of Beinn Fhada, Gearr Aonach, and Aonach Dubh. And if you want a challenge, you can try hiking the Three Sisters Glencoe Walk. At the base of this viewpoint, you’ll find the Meeting of Three Waters, also known as Glencoe Falls, a popular waterfall that even appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Nearby is the Coe River Waterfall, offering a similar scenic stop.
Outdoor lovers have plenty to choose from. The Glencoe Lochan Trail is a popular gentle woodland walk around Glencoe Lochan, perfect for those wanting something easier. Other simple routes include the Glencoe Orbital Path and the walk to Signal Rock and An Torr. For something tougher, the Lost Valley is a popular 2 - 4 hour walk with rocky, steep sections. More experienced adventurers often head for ridge walks and scrambles like the Aonach Eagach Ridge.
Glencoe Mountain Resort, which sits on Rannoch Moor AONB with views of Beinn a' Chrùlaiste, is Scotland's oldest ski centre. If visiting in winter and depending on the snow, you can experience skiing, snowboarding, sledging, and more. In summer, you can try disc golf, mountain biking, or simply enjoy the chairlift views.
If you find yourself wanting to relax after this, stop at the Clachaig Inn, a friendly and traditional Highland pub serving Scottish classics like haggis, neeps, and tatties. Hagrid's Hut from the Harry Potter films is near here too.
This picturesque village also makes a great base to explore nearby Glen Etive, the famous single-track road also known as Skyfall Road, which featured in James Bond: Skyfall. Oban, Fort William, Ben Nevis, and the Glenfinnan Viaduct (as seen in Harry Potter) are also easily accessible from here.
Whether you're after stunning scenery that has featured as backdrops in worldwide films or access to endless outdoor adventure, Glencoe offers an unforgettable experience to charm every kind of visitor.
