Things to do in Fowey
The small and attractive town of Fowey is a true haven for outdoor enthusiasts and families looking for either an action packed break, or simply somewhere to soak up the sunshine and relax. You'll be delighted with this charming town's attractions, which include an aquarium, beautiful outdoor spaces to explore, as well as fun on the water.
You simply can’t visit Fowey without stretching out on one of its sandy beaches and taking in the beautiful scenery, and perhaps booking a fun boat trip either along the coastline, or up the Fowey estuary.
Fowey River Trips and Sea Cruises offers a choice of trips, which are great for exploring the harbour and river. You may even spot some of the local dolphins. Encounter Cornwall offers kayak and canoe hire too, which is a lovely way to explore the river and Fowey estuary.
The estuary is a beautiful place for walkers and is home to wonderful wildlife including a number of interesting birds. There is a range of walks to suit different fitness and experience levels, with popular options including Hall Walk and connecting with the South West Coast Path at Readymoney Cove, which is a pretty sandy beach.
Walkers should also make time to explore the attractive remains of St Catherine's Castle, a small artillery fort, which is less than a mile from the town centre.
The Fowey Aquarium is ideally located on Fowey Town Quay and has a fascinating mix of local Cornish sea life including crabs, lobsters and even eels. This independent aquarium will give you a real feel for the local area and everyone is sure to love the touch pool – where you can meet face to face with the aquariums fishy friends!
Fowey Town Tours are well worth a look too, providing tours of the local area starting and finishing at the Town Quay. They’re a great way to get a feel for the place from real locals, plus be taken to all the best photo spots too.
The Fowey Museum is opens a door on local history – and you'll love its original 15th Century house location. It may be tiny (just one room in fact!) but it makes up for a lack of size in facts. The artists in your group will also love the Fowey River Gallery, which plays home to a number of visiting exhibitions per year showcasing both local and national artists.
Fowey’s most famous author Daphne Du Maurier is celebrated at her namesake, Daphne du Maurier Literary Centre, which holds a number of festivals throughout the year and is well worth a visit, even if just to pick up a new or second hand book.
