Things to do in Dartmouth
Those interested in getting out on the water will love Dartmouth and the range of watersports on offer on the River Dart. You could decide to go on an adventure with Sea Kayak Devon or pick and choose from sailing, surfing, paddleboarding or coasteering. Paddling up the river to Stoke Gabriel or Totnes for lunch or a drink makes for a very special day out.
There are plenty of good beaches in the local area, including Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands - both well-loved shingle beaches with crystal clear water and very little seaweed, making either the perfect place for a swim in the summer. The Dartmouth heated outdoor swimming pool on the outskirts of town is also on hand if the weather is too chilly.
Dartmouth Castle is a great way to spend an afternoon exploring, with a superb location at the start of the Estuary it's the perfect place for family photos. Reach it via a ferry ride from the harbour and spot sealife on the way, then learn about its fascinating history protecting Dartmouth for 600 years.
There are plenty of other boat trips available in the summer months, and the harbour is a lovely spot to relax and watch the boats go by while enjoying some food or drinks from one of the selection of cafes and restaurants. Likewise, an amble around both the house and gardens at Greenway is enjoyable. Now a National Trust property, it formed the setting of many Agatha Christie novels and also her home.
For more thrills and spills, Woodlands Family Theme Park is only a short drive out of town.
If you’re looking for good walking routes, then Dartmouth has lots to offer including the South West Coast Path, which offers lovely views and plenty of photo ops. You’re also spoilt for choice with Dartmoor National Park, Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve and the Berry Head National Nature Reserve, all well worth the trip.
Further afield, the towns of Paignton and Brixham have attractions such as Splashdown Quaywest Waterpark and Paignton Zoo, or you could venture further to Torquay’s beaches or caves.
