Things to do in Wareham
A great place to kick off your visit to Wareham is a stroll around the town's wide variety of shops and restaurants. The Wareham Saxon Wall Walk around the outskirts of the town will help set your bearings too.
Perhaps follow that with a trip to the Wareham Town Museum, which offers an interesting insight into the town and surrounding area from prehistoric times up to the present day. The nearby Tank Museum at Bovington is also fascinating, with an array of tanks and live displays.
Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre will delight animal lovers of all ages with its range of primates and informative talks. Most of the animals here have been rescued, and you can take a self-guided walk through the centre and read about each animal as you go. Families with little ones will also love Farmer Palmer's, a fantastic farm park for under 8s.
The ghost village at Tyneham was taken over by the army when the area was needed for training in 1943 and still remains under their possession. With a population of zero, time has stopped there - which makes for a captivating stroll. Alternatively, the National Trust property of Clouds Hill, used to be the retreat of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and is well worth a visit.
Further exploring can be had at the Stoborough Heath National Nature Reserve and the Hartland Moor National Nature Reserve too, both situated nearby. Or head south to the coast to find Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
Old Harry Rocks by Studland is another coastal highlight.
If heading out on the waters of the River Frome sounds like good fun, Wareham Boat Hire provides a variety of options including rowing boats, motorboats, kayaks and paddleboards for self-led tours.
Poole and Bournemouth are both within easy reach by car.
