Things to do in Kirkby Lonsdale
This quaint market town is in a picturesque position beside Ruskins View, along the western edge of the Dales - and it's just undeniably pretty.
You'll know it's steeped in history thanks to the buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which only adds to the charming village feeling and dates all the way to the 11th century. Down by the banks of the River Lune is where famous artist Turner painted 'Ruskins View', so take an amiable stroll along the riverside and maybe dabble in a spot of watercolours yourself.
Another great spot for a photo or a painting sesh would be the three arches of the Devils Bridge which span the river and date back to the 13th century. From the water, you're soon at a pretty market square where a popular market is held each Thursday, and you can chow down on a cake in local tearooms, pick up mementoes in independent shops and settle down with a pint and a smile in a proper local pub.
For little ones with a with a sweet tooth, the Enchanted Chocolate Mine will be irresistible, and inside they'll learn how chocolate is made. Attached is a beautiful choccie shop called Chocolat, where the most decadent truffles can be found.
Gorgeous views over the Lune Valley are enough to get anyone reaching for their walking boots, so step out in the rolling fields and get exploring. You can visit Casterton - home to an ancient stone circle and a very modern, and very attractive 9-hole golf course. Gargreth, the well known 'highest point in Lancashire' offers stunning views, as does walking up Crag Hill or a visit to the Barbon Beck, a fast flowing stream which leads to Fell House.
Nearby the busy town of Kendal has excellent churches, manor houses and the ruins of Kendal Castle. Make time for Bowness on Windmere which offers fantastic family friendly day trips out such as the World of Beatrix Potter, the Fun Factory with its own ball lagoon and the Windermere Quays.
