For starters, the surrounding countryside of rolling hills is perfect for walks and hikes. Try the nature reserve of Kinder Scout, following the old Woodhead Railway line on the Longdendale Trail, the stunning views from the Lantern Pike, or further afield the breath-taking Chew Valley.
Bring your bike or take a gentler stroll on the Sett Valley Trail - a 2.5 mile bridleway path in the nearby village of Hayfield.
A great family friendly choice is Manor Park, which has a large area for children to play in and a charming miniature railway. If it's good enough for the Duke of Norfolk, it's sure to suit!
The town itself has plenty of independent shops as well as cafes, pubs and restaurants serving local produce where you can refuel.
If you're a history lover a trip to the ancient Roman fort, Melandra Castle is a must, as it's the only Roman relic of significance in the entirety of the Peak District. The Dinting Viaduct is another impressive structure, built in the 19th century - and just perfect for a few snaps.
Nearby, if you crave the hustle and bustle of the city, Manchester is a short drive away and Stockport even closer, both of which offer an extensive range of activities to keep the whole family entertained.
