Things to do in Lewes
Up on the hill overlooking the town is the town’s most famous landmark, Lewes Castle. From the top you get a fine 360-degree view of Lewes and its hinterland. A great stop for those of you looking for historical things to do.
Next up is Anne of Cleves House, this beautiful medieval timber house was bequeathed to Henry VIII’s fourth wife as part of her divorce settlement. Highlights include the authentically furnished kitchen and a museum which exhibits artefacts from Lewes’ past, including the mysterious mummified rat and silver spoon. You can also dress up in Tudor costumes and get a feel for what life was really like for past residents before taking tea in the garden.
Speaking of gardens, not to be missed are The Grange Gardens. They are a little piece of heaven on earth right in the centre of Lewes town. ‘The Grange’ as it is known by the locals, is a public walled garden split by the Winterbourne stream. It is a delightful labyrinth of nooks and crannies including a peace garden, fountain and disused well.
Looking for more green spaces, Lewes Priory park won’t disappoint. It’s a great spot for the whole family, rich in history and opportunities to picnic and play. It is here, in the 11th century, monks came from Cluny in France to establish the first Cluniac priory in England and the site with its evocative remains still has an air of tranquillity and serenity.
Get out exploring on the Lewes self-guided Treasure Trail and discover so much more about this famous historical town. There's clues for all ages to get their teeth into and what's more, you won't even notice that you're learning and getting exercise as you'll be too busy searching for the answers.
The Pells Outdoor Swimming Pool claims to be the oldest documented swimming pool in the country, and offers a huge spring fed pool, plus facilities for the whole family to enjoy. This seasonal pool is open between May and September each year, set in a beautiful part of the town next to a small park with a playground. They have a stunning tree lined lawn for sunbathing, as well as the sun terrace itself.
Animal lovers get ready, Spring Farm offers the chance to pet animals and play all in one place. Meet your favourite farm animals up close, have fun in both indoor and outdoor play areas, ride the pedal go-karts and even more... Splash around or build sandcastles in the sand and water play area or take part in a trailer ride.
Don’t let the rain dampen your spirits, Ocean Adventure Indoor Play Centre has got you covered with soft play, ball pits, slides, all the activities needed to keep the little ones occupied.
Harveys, the local brewery, has a shop selling their great selection of beer. You can even have a tour of the brewery and unlike many tours of commercial premises, Harvey’s brewery tour is not simply a walk around with a guide; it is a chance for them to meet their customers and gain an insight into the heritage of brewing at Harvey’s. The informal sampling session that follows is also a great catalyst for one to one questions and answers.
No visit to Lewes is complete without spending some time in the Needlemakers with its ancient brickwork, massive beams and echoes of a fascinating industrial past. Where once Broad’s candles were made and during WW1 surgical needles were manufactured, there is now a flourishing group of specialist shops.
Lewes is near to the seaside city of Brighton and Hove where you can visit its world-famous Pier, the stunning Pavilion or simply relax on the pebble beach.
