Things to do in Brighton and Hove
Brighton is a vibrant seaside spot surrounding the south coast, but within easy reach of the capital. In times gone by Brighton welcomed hoardes of cityslickers on every sunny day, inspiring famous films such as Quadrophenia. Nowadays, with plenty to delight visitors of all ages, this is a great destination for families, couples and friends alike.
For the young at heart, stroll along the pier and put your all into the competition in the pier’s arcade games. Beach lovers will also enjoy catching a tan on Brighton's pebbled beach and paddling in the ocean, while the creativity on display during the Brighton Sand Sculpture Festival will get you started on your own sandy masterpiece.
Don’t miss the magnificent Royal Pavilion which served as a pleasure palace for King George IV, and looks like it belongs in an entirely different continent. Nearby Brighton Dome is the top culture spot on the south coast with hit shows and performances.
Then North Laine and the Brighton Lanes entice visitors with their unique selection of vintage and independent shops, stalls and markets. You can purchase anything out of the ordinary here, nothing is too quirky.
Brighton also boasts the intriguing Booth Museum which will appeal to anyone with an interest in natural history, as well as Preston Manor which is a window into upstairs-downstairs life in a historic house. It’s also reputed to be one of Britain's most haunted houses, so prepare for a chill down your spine!
Sightseers who fancy exploring further afield can step over to neighbouring Hove, which is home to Hove Museum and Art Gallery, a charming Italian-style villa with some superb fine art displays.
The beautiful South Downs will be a real favourite with walkers and cyclists, offering nothing but glorious views and tranquil sheep in every direction. Alternatively, climb Castle Hill outside the town, set within a nature reserve, to experience boundless views and a sense of incomparable achievement.
