Caernarfon campsites
Wedged between the gleaming Menai Strait and the deep-purple hills of North Wales, Caernarfon is known for one thing more than anything else, the mighty Caernarfon Castle which commands the lion's share of attention, but the town's narrow lanes especially Palace Street, Hole in the Wall Street and Castle Square and stylishly redeveloped waterfront also merit a visit. Things to do in Caernarfon
There’s no other place to start than the mighty Caernarfon Castle, possibly the most famous of Wales’s castles. History comes alive at Caernarfon in so many ways – along the lofty wall walks, beneath the twin-towered gatehouse and within imaginative exhibitions located within the towers. The castle also houses the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Wales’s oldest regiment.
Although the castle is arguably Caernarfon’s biggest attractor of tourists, it’s not the only thing in the town worth visiting. Caernarfon is a bustling market town with a busy port offering magnificent views over the Menai Strait, the channel that separates Anglesey from mainland Wales. The waterfront itself is a beautiful place to stop for a bite to eat with endless views. You can even take a boat tour with Menai Strait Pleasure Cruises.
Take a tour of the town and discover the history of Caernarfon and its people from medieval times to the present day, visiting some of the unseen treasures which this unique town has to offer. You’ll hear stories about people, places and the history of this very Welsh town in the company of a local man with Caernarfon in his heart. Experience some of the hidden gems of Caernarfon, enjoy a laugh or two, and learn a few words of Welsh on ‘My Town My Walk’.
Or take yourself on a self-guided spy trail through the cobbled streets of Caernarfon packed with hints leading you to clues all over town, what better way to see the sights of Caernarfon than on the Spy Mission Treasure Trail.
Looking for a magical day out... Gypsy Wood Park is just that, a day out for visitors of all ages, which all the family will love. There aren't many places where you can combine the magic of fairies with the charm of animals and the rugged wilderness of 20 acres of beautiful natural woodland, but at Gypsy Wood Park, that's just what they do, which is why they are one of Wales' best kept secrets.
Sticking with the fun factor, Parc Glynllifon promises a fun day out for all the family with historic gardens and a country park. Be sure to pack the camera because it's just beautiful. There are several water features which the kids are encouraged to play in, a couple of modern sculpture trails and also some locally run treasure hunts and orienteering courses too.
If you are looking for an action-packed day out, grab your towel and swimmers and head over to Plas Menai, the National Outdoor Centre for Wales based on the banks of Menai Strait and experience sailing, windsurfing, kayaking or the increasingly popular stand up paddle boarding,
Maybe you fancy climbing to great heights, Beacon Climbing Centre is an exciting all-weather venue, with fun activities suitable for the whole family. Conquer the high roped walls for an unbeatable sense of achievement, experience the freedom of climbing without using a rope in the low-level bouldering area or try something that's entirely off-the-wall, CrazyClimb featuring a series of wacky climbing challenges.
Calling all thrill seekers, Redline Indoor Karting welcomes families to burn some rubber on their flexible layout indoor tracks, with several layout options available creating varying lengths to tackle. Adult and children karts are available.
The Welsh Highland Railway is also here, sedately carrying you the 25 miles to Porthmadog in style and comfort. The heritage railway takes you on a picture book beautiful journey, running alongside the foot of Snowdonia’s majestic mountains and along through the Aberglasyn Pass.
Dinas Dinlle is nearby, a small settlement with a large, sandy beach. Visit when the tide is out as the beach is simply massive at the time - ideal for building sand castles and sunbathing.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? A helicopter?! It could be any of the above at Caernarfon Airport’s Pleasure Flights experience. They run sightseeing trips: take in the stunning Snowdonia views via plane or helicopter and enjoy a guided tour of the area.
Plane enthusiasts will love the Airworld Aviation Museum found in Caernarfon Airport, with it’s varied collection of aircraft. Or, those more inclined to the equestrian arts will find a great deal of pleasure going for mountainous rides with the Snowdonia Riding Stables.
A short drive away, and great option for a day trip, is the picturesque Bangor. A small coastal city, worth the visit offering more beautiful views over the Menai.
Or venture a little further and head over the water to The Isle of Anglesey. Your family won’t feel like a fish out of water on this day out. Discover what lurks at the bottom of the Irish Sea at Anglesey Sea Zoo. Rather than large sharks, tropical fish or sea turtles take the time to discover fascinating creatures from around the coast in the UK. There’s far more to our waters than you might think including octopus, lobster, spiny seahorses, conger eels and even small cat sharks.
