Things to do in Lymington
Lymington is a bustling, colourful town with lots to see and do. Its Georgian high street is the venue for a well-known street-market every Saturday morning. This is the busiest time of the week for the town and this popular market boasts a range of stalls selling everything from local fine foods to craftwork and antiques.
The town's many features include a unique series of cobbled streets leading down to the pretty main quay area, popular with visitors who wish to sit, relax and watch the world sail by.
Boat trips around the Solent can be taken from the quayside and private sailing, motor-boating and fishing trips may be arranged at short notice. For those wishing to adventure further afield, Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight is reached by ferry in only a half hour and caters for both foot passengers and cars.
Lymington Sea Water Baths has everything you need for an action-packed day, from an inflatable obstacle course to water zorbs and stand up paddleboards as well as kayaks and a bit of aqua jousting.
Looking for adventure, try the Lymington Treasure Hunt Trail, where code cracking is important. The route takes around 2.5 hours to complete but there’s loads more to see and do; check out the quayside walk for lovely views over the water. This route also has two starting points - one on Bath Road, the other by the Parish Church - so you can take it at your own pace.
St Thomas' Church is the focal point of the town and sits in a dominant position at the top of the High Street hill. The church has parts which date back to 1250 and features a distinctive bell tower.
A short drive away brings you to Milford-on-Sea where you’ll find Hurst Castle, situated at the seaward end of the shingle spit that extends a mile and a half from Milford-On-Sea.
Perfect for cyclists and walkers is The Solent Way Walk. In one direction along the coast it will bring you to the coastal town of Milford-on-Sea in the other direction inland from the coast through the beautiful New Forest and along the river’s edge to Beaulieu.
If you’re looking for outdoor spaces to explore, The Lymington Reedbeds Nature Reserve is the largest of its kind along the South Coast. The perfect place to try and spot the rare breeds of birds such as the Cetti's warbler and bearded tit. It is excellent for walking too with views stretching out to the Isle of Wight. Other nearby nature reserves worth visiting include Roydon Woods, Lymington and Keyhaven Marshes and Bouldnor Forest.
Lymington Yacht Haven is a five gold anchor marina offering luxurious facilities, a relaxing and interesting place to wander and sit and look at the scenery.
The nearby Braxton Gardens, set around attractive Victorian farm buildings with a courtyard and raised lily pool leading into a walled garden serve excellent afternoon tea and are pleasant for summer strolls.
Not to be missed is the quaint village of Boldre with an impressive church and the beautiful Spinners garden where rare plants can be found. The village is quintessentially English in character, marked out by its rich array of magnificent old trees, traditional forest properties and the ancient multi-arched bridge spanning the river. Spinners Garden offers a joyful experience for everyone. The garden occupies a wonderful tranquil setting on a slope overlooking the river valley between Boldre and Lymington. Visitors to the garden enjoy lovely walks amongst a variety of woodland interspersed with Rhododendrons, Magnolias, Camellias, Hydrangeas, Japanese Maple and rare shrubs. There is a mixture of wet areas featuring moisture loving flowers and plants and carefully thought out foliage adds interest and year-round colour.
