First to spring to anyone’s mind in terms of Scarborough attractions, is the seaside, with the excellent Scarborough Beach promising hours of seaside fun in pristine golden sand. If you’re not feeling energetic, there are cliff lifts that can raise or lower you from the seafront at the South Bay. Walk the Victorian promenade or take a donkey ride on the beachfront for some retro glam.
Scarborough Castle is a secluded ancient monument that will fire up the imagination with thoughts of times gone by, packed with 3000 years of history.
Those who wish to be captivated by great shows and performances should make time to visit the Stephen Joseph Theatre. It’s fully accessible for visitors with disabilities and runs local community events on top of box office hits.
Scarborough also has lovely outdoor spaces that will lure nature lovers, such as Peasholm Park and the South Cliff Italian Gardens which are pleasant places to relax during a busy day of sightseeing. In South Cliff, dawdle through sheltered gardens and sit by a fishpond overseen by statues of Roman gods.
A fine choice of museums and art attractions can be explored in Scarborough as well. The Scarborough Fair Collection will fascinate kids and adults alike, while the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre, the Rotunda Museum and the Scarborough Art Gallery are also well worth visiting.
No doubt you’ve heard of Scarborough Fair from Simon and Garfunkel’s famous song, but did you know that Scarborough continues its fine tradition with an indoor market? Recently refurbished at a cost of 2.7 million the South Bay Market Vaults are a hidden gem full of unique finds.
Before you leave, join a boat trip just off shore to watch the lazing seal colonies, and your best chance of seeing common seal pups will be in June and July. While you’re at Scarborough harbour, take a ride on Scarborough's pleasure steamers, the Regal Lady and the Coronia, or go on the mini pirate ship Hispaniola where kids will find their inner buccaneer.
The nearby town of Whitby is a great choice for a day trip and walkers and cyclists can reach it via the Scarborough to Whitby rail trail, where the journey is half the fun.
Robin Hood's Bay, both a bay and small fishing village, is also an interesting place to explore, while the beautiful North York Moors National Park is a real treat waiting to be discovered for outdoor enthusiasts.
