Things to do in Robin Hood's Bay
The small fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay is a delightful place for anyone looking to escape to the seaside for a relaxing holiday. Just the name should be sufficient to tickle your curiosity.
No one is quite sure how the fishing village gained its famous title, but ancient lore tells of Robin Hood encountering pirates, and returning their booty to the poor of the fishing bay. You’re free to seek out other explanations if that one seems unlikely!
First on your tour of the place, the Old Coastguard Station is a great place to visit, with a range of informative displays that will fascinate young and old. Then, stroll into the Robin Hood's Bay Museum to discover more about the history of the village. Inside you can read the daring adventures of historic rescues in the bay and see exactly how contraband was concealed within a smuggler’s house.
Looking for something a little different, with a good dose of spookiness? Then venture out on the Robin Hood's Bay Ghost Walk to discover a different side to the village and the strange goings-on within it.
One of the most unique attractions that calls visitors from miles around is the Bay’s Victorian Weekend. Once a year, you can find yourself in the middle of Victoriana, circled by people in clothing from the period and playing traditional games like splat the rat.
Visitors looking to get active can enjoy outdoor activities in the area including cycling, horse riding and excellent walks such as the long-distance Coast to Coast Walk which roves past some of Britain’s best beauties. The area is so sublime, the author Leo Walmsley set his Bramblewick series in the village.
Delve into Sneaton Forest, a natural beauty spot where kids can paddle in slim waterways and there’s a gorgeous tea garden beside the waters of the Falling Foss – or‘waterfall’.
Exploring the picturesque bay in which the village is located is a lovely way to pass the time, with a sand and pebble beach that will entice families as well as fossil hunters. There are a variety of shops and cafes to explore in the village and music and festival events are held throughout the year too.
It’d be a shame not to spread out and get a sense of wider Yorkshire with so much to see. A large part of the east coast from Staithes to Flamborough is known as the Dinosaur Coast and is a great place for fossil-hunting, because those creatures from the dawn of time are still very much in evidence. The North York Moors National Park is a beautiful place for nature lovers to explore and the seaside towns of Whitby and Scarborough are well worth visiting too.
