Things to do in York
The historic walled city of York offers the perfect combination of history, architecture and culture. Discover ancient ruins and a gothic cathedral, explore museums or indulge in a sweet treat, it is known as the "home of chocolate" after all! With over a 2,000 year history spanning back to the Romans, this beautiful city has something for everyone.
Unsurprisingly, one of the biggest draws here are the historical landmarks on offer, and the most famous is York Minster Cathedral. Right in the heart of the city, this cathedral blends history, art and architecture. Don't miss climbing up the central tower for unmatched 360° views across York. The City Walls encircle the city centre, offering one of the most unique and historic walks in the area, another must-do for history buffs. Built on Roman foundations, this two mile walk is free of charge and is a great way to explore the city from above. Clifford's Tower is almost all that is left of York's historic Castle and is another location with beautiful views of both the city and surrounding countryside from the roof platform at the top.
For a visit to the past, The Shambles is one of the most well-preserved medieval streets in the world. Step on the ancient cobbles and take in the crooked buildings and tucked away independent shops and cafes, widely believed to have been the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. York is also home to some historic houses, with Treasurer's House and Barley Hall both giving some insight into the past, with exhibits and antique collections.
Flowing right through the centre of York is the River Ouse. Once used for trade and defence during Roman and Viking times, today the river is the perfect place for a slower pace of life. Stroll along the riverside paths, stopping in one of the many parks, gardens or eateries dotted along the banks, or hop on a City Cruise and see the city from the water.
Of course, this city is also home to a number of top attractions, perfect for all the family. Travel back in time at the JORVIK Viking Centre for a peek into how the city looked over 1,000 years ago at this immersive experience. Or visit York Art Gallery, with a wide range of rotating exhibitions to explore, as well as the Yorkshire Air Museum, home to over 40 aircraft exhibits. The National Railway Museum houses a collection of nearly 300 historic trains and is the largest railway museum in the UK. This free of charge museum is home to hands-on exhibits, interactive displays and family friendly learning spaces.
A visit to the York Barbican is also a must for theatre fans, hosting a wide range of events including live music and comedy at the largest entertainment venue in York. Or if you're after a more spine-tingling adventure, don't miss the York Dungeon, a journey into the city's darkest tales. For a more unique way to explore York, pick up a map for the York Cat Trail, a fun self guided tour where you can spot twenty cat sculptures hidden around the city.
Kids will love York Maze, open July to September. This imaginative maze is one of the largest maize mazes in the world with plenty of other attractions and an adventure park to explore too, making it a brilliant family day out. Budding archaeologists won't want to miss, DIG, a hands on archaeological experience that turns history into a real life adventure for young explorers aged 5-12. No trip to York is complete without a visit to the York Castle Museum. Housed in a former 18th century prison that was once part of York Castle, exhibits here showcase life from the 17th century and even include a full scale recreated Victorian street!
Outside the museum lies York Museum Gardens, a 10 acre botanical garden right in the city centre. This beautifully maintained green space is also home to the Ruins of St Mary's Abbey and is filled with ancient trees, wildflowers and wildlife. For more outdoor adventures, don't miss Rowntree Park with a lake, woodland walks, garden areas and children's play area. Deans Park and Homestead Park also offer landscaped open green spaces within the city, perfect for a picnic!
Speaking of picnics, you'll definitely want to sample a sweet treat or two here. Known as the "home of chocolate", York is the birthplace of iconic British chocolate brands Rowntree's and Terry's, with the Yorkie chocolate bar even being named for it! Visit York's Chocolate Story to learn more about the city's delicious chocolate making heritage through an interactive guided tour (don't worry, tasting is encouraged too!). York is also famous for its gin, with a visit to both York Gin shop and York Distillery a must for those wanting to sample a local tipple. Betty's Tea Rooms is also top of many a foodies list, known for its famous afternoon teas, signature “Fat Rascal” scones and other delicious treats.
York really is a city like no other. With 2,000 years of rich (and delicious!) history combined with unique architecture and green spaces, you'll find something special in every corner. York offers the perfect blend of old and new in a city just waiting to be explored.
