Things to do in Whitby
Situated along the Yorkshire Coast, Whitby is a picturesque seaside town offering stunning coastlines, some of the highest cliffs in England, and winding, narrow cobbled streets. Rich in history, this coastal gem is the birthplace of Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula and attractions such as Whitby Abbey.
Camping in Whitby means you’re never short of things to do! From exploring its harbour to indulging in some of the best fish and chips in England, every corner of the town has something to offer.
The town holds strong connections to Captain James Cook, an English explorer who moved there in 1746 to train as an apprentice. Follow in his footsteps and gain a glimpse into his fascinating life at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Set in the 17th-century house where he once lived, the museum offers a window into Whitby’s maritime past and Cook’s early adventures. Whalebone Arch is also an impressive must-see located at the top of the West Cliff near the Captain Cook Statue, standing as a symbol of Whitby's whaling heritage.
Whitby’s history is also steeped in myths and legends. Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula was inspired by the town’s eerie charm. The dramatic Whitby Abbey, dating back to the 7th century, stands as a historic landmark. Its haunting ruins appear in the novel and offer coastal views. Climb the 199 Steps to reach it, and step through his imagination.
Whitby is packed with fascinating places to explore for all ages. You will find the North York Moors Railway, an ideal field trip for keeping the kids entertained. Enjoy a blissful steam train ride through 24 miles of countryside to unlock more of Whitby’s rural beauty. If you prefer walking, explore The Cinder Track, a 21.7 mile trail along the old railway line to Scarborough, offering woodlands and sea views.
Then head to the Whitby Museum and Pannett Art Gallery to see fossils, artwork and more. After a day full of exploring, roam the many boutique shops which fill its quirky streets, but don't leave before buying a unique piece of Whitby jet jewellery (or hunting for it along the beach).
Beyond its top attractions, Whitby’s calendar of events and family-friendly fun keeps the town buzzing year-round. There is the Whitby Goth Weekend, attracting visitors from across the UK and overseas twice a year. Gather here to celebrate gothic culture, alternative music, and of course, Dracula lovers. Speaking of the Count, make a visit to the Dracula Experience for an interactive journey. Families will also love the Ghost Walk, a 75 minute tour filled with tales of the haunted lighthouse, Dracula's bench and more. Or, there is the Bram Stoker International Film Festival, which helps keep his eerie spirit alive.
Families can enjoy crabbing along the harbour walls, tucking into a seaside ice cream, exploring Pannett Park, or taking a boat ride out to sea for a magical whale watching experience. Enjoy a relaxing walk along Whitby’s two piers, situated right at the mouth of the River Esk, and see if you can also spot fishing boats passing by. Then discover nearby villages with a ride through the Esk Valley Line.
It doesn’t stop there, the fun continues along Whitby’s coastline. Head here for colourful beach huts, long stretches of golden sand, and dramatic cliff views. From the main Whitby Beach and the nearby golden sands of Sandsend, West Cliff Beach, and Tate Hill Beach, there’s a spot for every kind of seaside escape. Walk along Whitby Harbour and soak up the picturesque sunsets. Explore further along the Heritage Coast to find gems like Ravenscar and Robin Hood’s Bay, each with its own beauty.
A trip to Whitby is never complete if you haven't ticked fish and chips off the list, with spots like Magpie Café named among the best in Britain! This seaside harbour holds some of the best seafood restaurants scattered along its coastline, serving everything from freshly caught scampi to smoked kippers, so after a trip to the beach, end it with a bite like no other. Be sure to stop off at one of the town's cosy coastal pubs before heading off.
Whitby is a hit for outdoor lovers, as it is surrounded by the North York Moors National Park, covering an expansive 554 square miles, and boasting 26 miles of heritage coastline. Wander through miles of hiking and cycling trails, or enjoy a slow walk through heather and moorlands with routes for all abilities. Discover the Cleveland Way, which runs through the town, offering views of dramatic cliffs.
Whether you come for its rich maritime heritage, its literary fame, or its natural beauty, Whitby promises a blend of culture, coastline, countryside, and character that few places in England can match.
