Things to do in Tenby
Tucked along the stunning Pembrokeshire coast in West Wales, Tenby (or Dinbych-y-Pysgod, translating to “little fortress of the fish”), is one of Wales’ most beloved seaside towns.
With its medieval walls, cobbled lanes, and pastel Georgian townhouses lining the seafront, Tenby is a coastal gem that blends charm and character. Wander through its many independent shops and cafes, then head for the sandy beaches that draw visitors year after year. Campsites in Tenby make the perfect base for a family getaway filled with fun, adventure, and lasting memories.
Many agree that Tenby’s charm lies in its iconic beaches, and it’s easy to see why. The town is framed by four golden beaches - North Beach, South Beach, Castle Beach, and Harbour Beach.
Castle Beach gets its name from being overlooked by Tenby Castle. It is very popular, having been crowned The Sunday Times Beach of the Year in 2019. This Blue Flag beach is a favourite with families due to its soft sand, shallow water, and rock pools revealed at low tide. Though the smallest, it connects to South Beach when the tide is out, creating one long sweep of sand that’s great for a stroll or a quick paddle after grabbing an ice cream nearby. If the tides are low, it’s also worth a trip to St Catherine's Island to visit the 19th century fort.
For watersports lovers, North Beach is the one for you (and the most popular). It’s ideal for bodyboarding, sailing, paddleboarding, surfing, and canoeing, and offers top clifftop views. Don’t forget to snap a photo of Goskar Rock, rising from the middle of the sand. From here, you can also catch beautiful views of St Margaret’s Island offshore.
Finally, Harbour Beach offers a more sheltered, tucked-away feel. It’s especially popular with families and younger children, with calm waters, colourful harbourfront views, and boats bobbing gently in the bay. Fingers crossed you might even catch a crab or two along the way!
For a true Tenby experience, the harbour itself is a must-visit. Stop by for mackerel fishing or hop on a peaceful boat trip to Caldey Island, one of Tenby’s most unique attractions. The 20-minute journey takes you to an island owned and run by a community of Cistercian monks, known for making their own chocolate, perfume, and fudge. Once there, stroll around the island, visit the lighthouse or Caldey Abbey, and look out for seabirds like puffins. Tenby Boat Trips are also great for spotting seals, dolphins, and taking in coastal views. Head over to the RNLI Tenby Lifeboat Station for a chance to watch a lifeboat launch from the ramps.
Once you’re back on shore, tackle part of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, an incredible 186-mile National Trail passing through Tenby. Grab a coffee from The Stowaway and walk to Saundersfoot for dramatic clifftop views across Carmarthen Bay. Whether you’re hiking, wildlife spotting, or simply soaking up the sea air, this stretch of coast is a bucket list must-do.
To uncover Tenby’s history, visit St Mary’s Church, dating back to the 15th century, with carved ceilings and 500-year-old memorials of past mayors. Head up to Castle Hill for the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery to explore local geology, maritime, and archaeology exhibits. The Tudor Merchant’s House gives you a glimpse into Tudor life. The 15th century town walls, Five Arches Gate, and the remains of Tenby Castle still mark the town’s medieval roots.
Families will also have a great time here. Burn off some energy with a visit to nearby Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo, The Dinosaur Park, Manor Wildlife Park, Oakwood Theme Park, or the Blue Lagoon Water Park for an adventure the kids will never forget.
After a packed day of fun, it’s time to fill your stomach. The town’s lanes, pedestrianised during the summer months, are filled with cosy pubs, cafes, and restaurants, many tucked within centuries-old buildings. Go for fish and chips if you fancy something laid-back, or dine out at favourites like Harbwr Brewery, Plantagenet House, and The Qube. Tenby also has a handful of microbreweries for a quick sample of a local pint.
Before your trip comes to an end, don’t forget to browse the many quirky independent shops and boutiques that line the streets, and pick up gifts and souvenirs to remember your stay.
With its blend of sands, history, and vibrant coastal life, Tenby captures the very best of Wales’ seaside spirit, remaining a place you’ll want to return to again.
